Stats Are For Losers
The moment that fantasy football became popularized in America is the moment we started letting nerds feel too comfortable talking about sports. There used to be a time when the only thing that mattered in sports was winning or losing. But once these dorks started to get involved, stats became everything. It doesn't matter if your team lost by 21 just as long as you threw for 300+ yards with a couple of touchdowns.
You look at preseason quarterback rankings in the NFL. Drake Maye legitimately looks like he cannot play the position right now, and he was ranked #4. Justin Herbert has never won a single goddamn thing in his career, and he was ranked #7. Jordan Love stinks. Baker Mayfield is 0-3. The best you can ask for out of CJ Stroud at this point is that you forget he even exists. Because at least at that point, he's not the main reason why your team is losing.
All of these quarterbacks were ranked ahead of Jalen Hurts. A guy who has proven every step of the way that he's simply a winner. A guy who has won a National Championship (with 30 minutes of help from Tua), has won a Super Bowl, was named a Super Bowl MVP, but apparently his "stats" aren't good enough to put him in the same conversation as Drake Maye.
If Jalen Hurts was crying on the sideline and needed his coach to come put his arms around him after turning the ball over 3 times, we'd never hear the end of it. But this is the guy who is supposedly a top 5 quarterback in the NFL because he looked somewhat decent after playing the shittiest schedule possible last year.
The fact of the matter is that we've allowed these nerds to convince us that winning doesn't matter. That wins shouldn't be considered a quarterback stat because there are so many other factors that go into it. But that's bullshit. Because some guys are winners, and some guys are losers. Some guys make plays when they need to win a game.
And some guys don't.
The only reason why people care about stats is because they need to find anything to make themselves feel better about losing. When you are winning, the stats are irrelevant.
Stats are for losers.
