Drew Brees Must Have Completely Shut His Brain Off On The Broadcast Yesterday After Saying Jalen Hurts Needs To Lower His Shoulder To Get A First Down Instead Of Sliding
If there's one guy out there who should know how important it is for quarterbacks to protect themselves from taking unnecessary hits--especially to the shoulder--it's Drew Brees. The man's right shoulder is practically non-existent at this point after taking that hit in 2005 trying to recover a fumble. Luckily he had a great doctor who was able to add 15 years to his career. But without Dr. James Andrews, his career is probably over just a couple years later.
So again, Drew Brees knows all of this intimately. You'd think a guy with that knowledge would understand that Jalen Hurts should protect his body in a week 2 matchup against the Titans rather than throw himself in harm's way just to pick up an extra 2 yards. Either Drew Brees is an idiot, or his brain just totally malfunctioned for a moment there. And I'm not quite sure exactly which option I'd prefer.
Part of me is getting really sick of seeing all these quarterbacks from the early 2000s flawlessly move over and crush their role on the media side of the game. The Mannings have their own broadcast. Tom Brady is the lead guy for Fox. Tony Romo would still be the lead guy for CBS if he wouldn't get so drunk on the golf course. It's nice to see one of these guys get on the broadcast and be terrible for a change.
But I'm a big Drew Brees guy. I'm pretty sure his kids play lacrosse, he's a part-owner of a professional pickleball team, he's not the biggest guy in the world. There's a lot about Drew Brees that I love. But if you ever tell my quarterback to do something dumb like that ever again, we're going to have a problem. Especially since the Eagles picked up the 1st down on the next play anyway and ended up scoring a touchdown on that drive. But sure, blow up Jalen's shoulder instead.
