NFL 2026 Survivor Pool Journey - Mapping Out The Season And Your Week 1 Pick

Welcome back into the weekly war room, fellow NFL Survivor Pool philosophers. Generals of the grid iron. Tacticians of living to see the kickoff of another week. I'm back for another year of breaking down each week to get you ready for your selection. There's much work to go. We have to figure out team tiers, look over the Week 1 eligible games, and map out the full season. Things change quick in the NFL. Especially in the early weeks. So, all of this is subject to change by Week 2.

That is. If we're still alive.

Week 1 can be a treacherous week. We all kind of think we know who's good and who's bad, but there's always one or two teams we're just dead wrong about. Plus, everyone just wants to survive Week 1 so the biggest favorite is going to go nuclear in the league percentage of teams taken. The trick is to try to fly right under that radar with the second or third big favorite. Except you also have to think about if you'll need that team during a tricky week down the line.

Let's set the stage. Here's kind of how my brain starts things off. Nothing super complicated yet. We just need to tier all teams based on their playability. Here are those tiers. While we can quibble with which teams go where, the structure of the tiers is about as perfectly delineated as possible.

Let's discuss some teams. We start from the bottom up as an exercise of practice. That's how Survivor Pool strategy should start. Don't think about who the best team is. Think about who the worst teams are. Like a lion eyeing a limping wildebeest. Let's meet our three selections for "Garbage".

Garbage Tier

I'm not sure Cam Ward is good at football. The Titans have Carnell Tate who caught zero passes in the preseason. I guess that's fine if he's lighting it up in practice. But I don't see how this team is getting more than a win or two more than last year.

Arizona is probably seen as the lowest of the low. And that all might be right. But I do remember Jacoby coming out and spanking Dallas in Jerry's World last year. That haunts me a little bit. But the rest of this roster is not ideal. Then we have the Browns who have had the worst quarterbacking overall probably in the history of football and their worst statistical passer of that group of worst NFL quarterbacks is the best option they currently have. This is the stat of the Cleveland Browns. They also gave away perhaps the best player on defense in the league as they enter a full on tank year.

Fuck with

Teams that are just plain bad - but not complete disasters. We'll see how Malik Willis does - I think he can at least keep the team in boring games which is why I'm not putting the Dolphins in Garbage just yet. But we'll see come Week 2. Raiders - Kirk Cousins should be an upgrade here from Geno to start the year. Would love to see a Week before picking their opponent. And the Falcons are a bit in flux seeing as how it kind of appears Penix might be winning the quarterback job by doing a fantastic job of not playing football. Something Tua probably should have done this preseason to have any hope that he is going to succeed.

Not playable but don't fuck with

Pretty much all in the name here. We need to see something before we can trust them - even vs "Garbage". Even some playoff teams on here like my Bears and a lot of people's sneaky Super Bowl pick in the Texans. I would just love to see the Bears consider scoring points and such in quarters 1-3 as it appears they'll need to with the state of their defense. And, I'm sorry, but CJ Stroud is a possible disaster in the making. Total yips. Can't trust him yet.

Playable vs Garbage

These are teams that you can definitely play vs Garbage.

Playable vs Garbage or Fuck with

These are teams you can definitely play vs Garbage or Fuck with.

Are we clear?

Great - let's get to the Week 1 slate. Here's our carefully crafted menu for Week 1.

Chargers at home vs Cardinals

This one appears to be favorite going into Week 1. The Cardinals are expected to be very bad. Hence why they are +10.5 on the road vs a Chargers team that now has Mike McDaniels running the offense. The Chargers probably are not going to be seen as having that many better opportunities to be used. At least that's some of the chatter I've heard. But they do play the Raiders twice, the Dolphins, and the Jets.

There's some risk here though. That offensive line should be healthier, but they just lost Biadasz, their big free agent get at center for the season. And you never know how things are going to go in Week 1 of a new offense. Plus, I've completely buried the lede in mentioning that this is the Chargers we are talking about.

Let's try to find a zag to what most likely looks like the consensus Week 1 pick.

Jaguars at home vs Browns

This looked like a team that was finding their identity and confidence by the end of the season in Liam Coen's first year as head coach. Here's the best way to view the Browns. Think of 32 Browns seasons in NFL history. Pick any you want. This year's team looks to be the Brownsest of them all which includes a winless tea let's not forget. This is going to be a popular pick too, but the Jaguars aren't the biggest free space of a team to pick. I like this option. But let's consider one more.

Lions at home vs Saints

So this one does break our rules. But we can at least kick the tires on it. The Saints start off 2026 as a sure fire "don't fuck with". A zesty team with some good energy and hope for second-year quarterback, Tyler Shough. A wild card team. And that's exactly why I don't suggest you think you can fuck with them. Not now anyway. Need to see if the wheels fall off.

Week 1 Picks

I have two entries in this. Just like last year. Here's what I'm going with:

Team A: Jaguars

Team B: Chargers

Tempted to just take Jags in both. But we'll make sure we move on to Week 2 even if one game is a total disaster. Plus both still give us nice paths to Week 18 with the limited info we have now.

Here's the roadmap to Week 18 for both entries.
