Philadelphia Flyers Add Some Serious Beef To The Lineup By Drafting Porter Martone With The 6th Overall Pick

Everything was going according to plan. Matthew Schaefer goes 1st overall to the Islanders. We all knew the Islanders were trying to trade back into the top 5 to take James Hagens. But Utah kept their pick at 4, and ended up selecting Caleb Desnoyers. The Nashville Predators kept their pick at #5 and selected Brady Martin.

So here were the Philadelphia Flyers on the clock with James Hagens still on the board. And with the 6th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers are pleased to select…

Porter Martone. Captain of the Brampton Steelheads in the OHL. He's a big fucking body who is going to add some serious beef to this Flyers' forward group. He's a 6'3" kid from Peterborough, so you know he's tough as nails. He was born to play Flyers hockey.

And sure, the size would tell you that he's obviously going to be labeled as a "power forward". But he's so much more than that. Yeah, he has some size. But he also has some serious skill as well.

37 goals and 61 assists in 57 games with Brampton this year. That's a playmaker in a power forward's body.

I know a lot of Flyers fans ended up selling themselves on James Hagens. I know a lot of Flyers fans are going to be a little confused by the pick. But the only reason James Hagens was the dream was because nobody thought Porter Martone would still be available at 6. He should have been a top 3-4 pick, going right after Misa. Hagens may have been the dream for the Flyers over the last week or so. But Porter Martone has been the dream for the Flyers since October.

You think about the Flyers forwards right now. They have a ton of skill in guys like Michkov, Zegras, and Konecny. But they're all on the smaller side. You need some size in the playoffs. You need a moose. Porter Martone can now be that moose in Philly. The broadcast compared him to Mikko Rantanen. Maybe that's a little lofty right away, but if that's the type of player he can develop into? Holy shit, what a steal the Flyers just landed.

Also, getting to call him the Porterhouse is a huge added bonus to this pick.
