Dudes Rock: Merrimack Club Hockey Player Moonlights As Zamboni Driver Between Periods

There's not a cushier existence than being a Division I athlete in college. These guys never have to worry about anything during their 4 years of college. Free equipment, nutritionists, tutors, everything is already taken care of for them. All they have to do is just show up and play. Then they get out in the real world and expect the same treatment.

But if you want to develop character? Mold young men and women who know what it's like to work for everything they get? Go ahead and play a club sport in college. Could be any sport at all. You're all on your own out there fending for yourself. If that means you need to pop off one of your skates between periods so you can go out there and drive the Zamboni to resurface the ice? Then you get your ass up on that Zamboni and clear off the ice between periods, and just hope your line doesn't have the first shift the next period.

Chances are you're the only Zamboni driver in the rink anyway, because you needed to pick up the part-time job. You're not getting any scholarship money to play club sports in college. Hell, you're actually paying more money just to play. Club sports just build character in ways that DI could never even imagine. They are the true grinders of the world.
