Only A Full Year Too Late, The Philadelphia Flyers Finally Decide It’s Time To Rebuild
The Philadelphia Flyers sucked a tremendous amount of ass last year. They were always going to suck a tremendous amount of ass. But for some reason, this sack of shit organization decided that they were going to “try” and show “effort” all season long.
What did that get them? Abso-fucking-lutely nothing. They couldn’t even sniff the playoffs, but they also couldn’t even sniff landing a top 3 pick in the draft with a chance to take a franchise altering talent later this month. No-man’s land. It’s where this franchise has been stuck for decades now.
Why the Flyers couldn’t commit to a full blown rebuild last year, we’ll never know. But it looks like they finally figured it out today.
Provorov to Columbus for a 1st round pick and a few other pieces. If you told me the Flyers would trade Ivan Provorov 5 years ago, I’d want to puke. I was certain he’d develop into a perennial Norris candidate and the backbone of the Flyers blue line for a decade. But he’s proven multiple times now that he’s uncoachable and far from irreplaceable.
Carter Hart was the one who was promised. This organization has had so many years with a great team, but awful goaltending. They could never turn that corner and put all the pieces together. Carter Hart was supposed to be the one. And to be fair…he could have been.
But now the Flyers have a really solid goalie with an absolute dog shit team in front of him. This team is in need of a 5-year rebuild, and Carter Hart just no longer fits that timeframe. So you move him now when you can get the most in return.
Best case scenario? The Flyers are able to move up in the draft enough this year to have a shot at landing Matvei Michkov. Worst case scenario? The Flyers still pick up a couple more first round draft picks and load up on future assets.
These are all the right moves for Danny Briere & Co to be making. It just drives me insane that it took them a year too long to figure it out. They could have locked up a major piece to speed up the rebuild by at least a couple years with a top 3 pick in this year’s draft. But those stubborn assholes are always a day late and dollar short. Story of this organization’s life.
