March Madness: Maryland Freshman Goalie Has One Of The Most Insane Sequence Of Saves To Help Knock Off Virginia In Overtime
If unbelievable games that constantly deliver are your type of thing, then you need to tune in every time Maryland and Virginia play against in each other in lacrosse. The 2019 Quarterfinals, 2021 National Championship, 2022 Quarterfinals. Every time these two teams meet up against each other, it's the best game of the year.
Today was no different. #1 and undefeated Virginia hosting #4 Maryland. Why this game was scheduled during the first weekend of the basketball tournament is beyond me. These are the two most dominant programs in college lacrosse over the past decade, and it should be appointment television every time they play each other. Kind of hard to get every bar in America to turn off the basketball games and put on Terps vs Hoos lacrosse, but holy shit did you miss out if you didn't get a chance to watch that overtime.
I mean just getting to overtime in the first place was wild. Virginia was down 2 with under 2 minutes to go in the game. But once we got to overtime, that's when the Brian Ruppel show was in full force. Freshman goalie coming in for the injured Logan McNaney earlier in the season. On the road against the #1 team in the country. Makes one huge save in OT, Brett Makar goes full Kihei Clark with an ill-advised pass to nobody that gets intercepted, another huge save by Ruppel, and then the save of his life off the rebound.
This was insanity.
What a mad lad. Kid is out of his mind for that one. Then the Terps get the ball back and it's Daniel Kelly delivering the dagger in OT to send the Terps home with the win.
What a game. What a matchup. Maryland vs Virginia always delivers. Just give us a 3-game series between these two teams on Memorial Day Weekend.
