Whiskers Vs. The Globetrotters: The Final Chapter
2008. June 14th. That was the day my four-year tenure as a Harlem Globetrotter came to a rather abrupt end. They told me they were putting me on waivers. They wanted to go younger and flashier. I understood. I’m no spring chicken and deep down in my heart, I knew this day would come. My teeth were long as shit boi.
Then they said they were letting me go for Ant Atkinson. I lost my cool, to put it lightly. Ant and I have had history for years. His Barton College Bulldogs beat my Winona State Wazoos in the 2007 DII National Championship game. We were up 7 with 45 seconds to go and Ant took over. 10 points in 45 seconds to snatch the title from us. First my championship, then my roster spot. What’s next?? My crippling anxiety?!? The man clearly knew no bounds so imagine MY surprise when I go to get a nice lunch with Jeffrey Vibbert, of “Vibbs! The Musical” fame, when I come face to face with Ant again.
Thankfully, we’ve all matured since 2008. It was great to see Torch and Big Easy again and show them around the office. The water? Under the bridge. The hatchet? Buried. I hereby declare the longstanding “Atkinson-Withers” brouhaha over. This is what Sweet Georgia Brown died for.
