Girl Takes a Cardboard Cutout of Danny DeVito to Prom

SourceA Pennsylvania high school student took an unorthodox approach to prom and brought a cardboard cutout of actor Danny DeVito to the dance.

WHTM-TV reports Allison Closs and her famous two-dimensional date joined other Carlisle High School seniors Friday for prom. Closs purchased the cutout of DeVito online along with a scooter she used to move the figure with.

If you asked me how high school life has changed since I graduated, I’d say the biggest differences are: Social media, Less bullying and this. And not necessarily in that order.

Cardboard Cutout Celebrity Prom Date Acceptance has come a long, long way since the days of powder blue tuxes and ruffled shirts. As a matter of fact, I scarcely doubt it was even allowed back then. We just had different attitudes about this sort of thing. If I had tried to take, say, a cardboard cutout of Jamie Sommers The Bionic Woman or Lynda Carter, I would’ve caught all sorts of hell. From church groups. Other parents. Classmates who thought it was “weird” not to bring a real flesh and blood date. Who’d think I was “odd” to buy a stand up figure on a scooter to bring instead.

So I’m glad that our society has come so far. And for the Allison Closses of the world who can date whomever they want without fear of being judged. Unfortunately I didn’t grow up in that world. I’m not saying I’d have done what she did, but it would’ve been nice to have had that choice. (In my case, it would have saved me a few bucks in Root Beer Schnapps and not affected my chances of getting laid at all.)

So congratulations to her and to Dr. Mantis Toboggan on what I’m sure was a night neither of them will ever forget. She literally could not have picked a better date.
