NY Times- A mail carrier in Brooklyn stashed about 17,000 pieces of undelivered mail for more than a decade because he was “overwhelmed” by the amount he had to deliver, the authorities said.

The carrier, Aleksey Germash, told investigators he “made sure to deliver the important mail,” according to a complaint filed in federal court.

When investigators interviewed Mr. Germash, he said the vehicle was his and that he had hoarded the mail because he was overcome by how much he had to deliver, according to the complaint.

The amount of undelivered mail investigators retrieved was staggering: 10,000 pieces inside his vehicle, 6,000 in his apartment and 1,000 in his work locker. At least one item was postmarked in 2005, according to the complaint.

Theft of mail by postal employees is not uncommon in a system that delivers more than 154 billion pieces each year and has nearly 336,900 mail carriers.

The Postal Service investigated 1,364 employee mail cases and arrested 409 employees between October 2016 and September 2017, according to the service.

Aleksey Germash is an all-time work shirker. This guy devoted like half the floor space in his apartment to strangers’ mail… out of laziness. Rather than do his job, he stored 17,000 letters and packages in his home and his car. This would be like if I was overcome by how many blogs I had to write so I smashed all the laptops at the office. It’s probably a dick move given that a LOT of people didn’t receive wedding invitations, which made them jealous and angry that they weren’t invited, which ended the friendship. Or maybe they didn’t get checks in the mail they were expecting, which prevented them from making mortgage payments, which caused them to lose their homes. Or maybe a guy was waiting on some polaroid nudes from his internet girlfriend. He never received them thanks to Aleksey Germash and consequently, he assumed she was a catfish. Having lost all faith in the world, he killed himself by drinking all the bleach under the sink. A few days later, his cleaning lady discovered his body and realized she couldn’t do her job because all the bleach was gone. In other words, Aleksey Germash’s laziness became… contagious.

But I still admire him. There’s tanking and then there’s tanking. Not to mention, all these people are still going to get their mail! He was keeping it safe for them. It’s entirely possible that some of the contents of the mail has appreciated enormously in value. Pokemon cards? Autographed notes? Fun little drawings from artists who, in the interim, have become famous? Aleksey Germash should be rifling through this shit and selling it on eBay. But he lives by a code–the postal code–and, like Tom Hanks at the end of Castaway, he’ll make sure that every last one of those letters gets to its destination.

JK, he’s fired for sure. Haha what a lazy bum.
