Adnan Syed Of "Serial" Fame Has Been Granted A New Trial

CBS News- A Maryland appeals court has granted a new trial for Adnan Syed in a murder case that gained the national spotlight after it was featured on the popular podcast “Serial.” The Maryland Court of Special Appeals found that Syed had ineffective assistance at his trial and ordered his convictions vacated in the murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed was convicted in 2000 of killing Lee and burying her body in a shallow grave in a Baltimore park.

In 2016, a lower court judge vacated Syed’s conviction and ruled that he deserved a new trial because his original attorney failed to cross-examine a key witness, reports CBS Baltimore. Prosecutors appealed that decision to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the state’s intermediate appeals court. A three-judge panel on Thursday upheld the lower court ruling granting him new trial.

Go Adnan Go!!! I guess. To be honest, I got confused when I saw this story because I thought Adnan had his trial years ago and got out of jail. The internet celebrated that a fucking podcast could get someone out of prison, a few blogs were written, and we all went about our lives.

But it turns out Adnan was very much in jail the last few years, eating gruel and fighting the dementors. I’m not sure what took so long between that judge vacating the conviction in 2016 and now. How the fuck do you wait TWO (2) years to put a potentially innocent man back on trial? Does that mean the trial starts in 2020? 2024? The next time the Cubs win the World Series? I guess I will just chalk this all up to the legal system being a quagmire. There are a bunch of things you can complain about sucking and nobody will really argue with you: The legal system, politics, and the weather to name three. Airline food was on there once upon a team, but standup comics killed that. Okay I’m rambling.

Anyway, does this mean we are getting another podcast? Is Sarah Koenig dusting off the 4-5 and giving us more content for our earballs? Reboots are the hottest thing in the movie and TV streets. Why not podcasts too? And if so, does that mean we get another KFC Radio Podcast About A Podcast talking about Serial? Because I could really use that since I am about to re-enter the 6 month fog of taking care of a newborn. I listened to the first Serial when Siena was a baby and it helped get the brain moving when my thoughts were buried under days of missing sleep. I’m ready to slander Jay’s motives in the comforts of my own home, re-imagine that Best Buy parking lot phone call for the billionth time, and call every interviewee that I disagree with even slightly a liar. Brendan Clancy Dave Portnoy spearheading KFC Radio in a pre-Serial world put Barstool in a great position to get where it is now. Serial blowing up and putting the podcast genre on the map is another big reason we have this absolutely preposterous HQ in New York and a $100 million valuation. It’s those reasons and more I am happy Serial is back in my life.
