Golf.com- The latest piece of evidence that Brandel Chamblee is one of the most polarizing voices in golf: He has blocked 20,000 would-be followers on his Twitter feed. This staggering stat comes out of his latest GolfChannel.com column, in which he offers some basic guidelines for interacting with him on Twitter: AVOID ALL CAPS, cool it on the exclamation marks (!!!) and, most important, never start or end a tweet with the word “dude.” Oh, and play nice. “I have an informal approach to the interaction that I have on Twitter, in that I view it as a party at my house: Come on in, argue if you see fit, but if you start breaking dishes, you have to go,” Chamblee writes. “I can smell rudeness a par-5 away. Hence, I block on average about 10 people a day, which means I have blocked around 20,000 people in my six-plus years on Twitter.”

20,000 people! That’s not a small number. But you know what? I’m not even mad at that. Twitter is all about personal preference and if Brandel doesn’t wanna hear from the haters and losers, of which there are many, that’s fine. The one thing I take issue with is that he blocked all those people instead of muting them. HUGE mistake. You can’t make a bigger mistake on social media. You gotta mute people. Blocking gives them all the satisfaction in the world. We’ve all done the thing where you take a screen shot of a person who blocked you and tweet it out to your followers as a point of pride. I do it too. We treat getting blocked by people like pelts on the wall and that’s exactly why you can’t block people. It gives them the sense of, “I did it! I got under his skin! What a bitch!” Muting takes all of that away. The beauty of muting is that the person doesn’t know and therefore can’t boast about it. But by far the best part about muting is they just continue to scream into the abyss because they think you can still see it. They just tire themselves out while you sit there completely oblivious. So do I care that Brandel Chamblee blocked 20,000 people? No not really but he should’ve muted them.
