Oxford United striker’s goal celebration sets a new standard for dickishness

I usually stick to weekend and midweek previews but every so often something happens in the world of soccer about which I have no choice but to blog. Among these extraordinary instances were the day the US government mushroom stamped FIFA

FBI

and the time Yaya Toure beheaded a small child:

Now comes this, the single most dickish celebration that I have ever witnessed in all my years of watching soccer sports.

I don’t know what the backstory is on why Oxford United striker Chris Maguire felt it necessary to go in on Peterborough goalkeeper Ben Alnwick like that. Gotta assume Alnwick must’ve taken Maguire’s mom out for a nice seafood dinner and never called her again or something. It was a game-winner and came deep into injury time, so I guess you could say it was a “big goal”, but mocking a keeper like that (after a PK no less) is right out of Hope Solo’s sportsmanship playbook.

The real question is how Alnwick can ever look his teammates in the eye again after having his soul stuffed in a locker like that and not responding by pounding Maguire’s face into bolivian. There are times for taking the high road, but this wasn’t one of them. Losing a game is one thing, losing every last shred of your dignity is another.

Be better, keep.
