A Free Downloadable Version Of GoldenEye For PC With HD Graphics Was Released If You Are Into That Sort Of Thing

The Verge- GoldenEye 007, the beloved N64 first-person shooter, has been recreated in high-definition glory by a team of dedicated fans over the course of 10 years. The mod, known as GoldenEye: Source, received its first update in more than three years this week. It’s free to download and it features 25 recreated maps, 10 different multiplayer modes, and redesigned versions of the original game’s 28 weapons. It was created using Valve’s Source engine, the same set of tools used to create Counter Strike and Half-Life games. So it’s a massive step up in both visuals and performance for one of the more drastically dated gaming masterpieces of the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, there’s no single-player mode included in the mod. Although the trailer appears to show iconic moments from the original — including the fight with Alec Trevelyan in the Cradle mission and the showdown with Jaws in the Aztec level — the developers’ website confirms the current version is multiplayer-only. “No, we have no plans to make single-player as we do not have the resources or sufficient number of developers to create it,” reads the official FAQ.

Oh my God, it is fucking beautiful. Just seeing the health meter, the cache of guns, and those majestic levels brings back so many great memories. And that music. That beautiful, wonderful music that could get you full of excitement and anxiety at the same time like it’s 1:00 on an NFL Sunday afternoon. The internet may be filled with asshole trolls and hackers that can ruin your life. But every so often a beam of light shines through and helps you forget all the evil out there.

And I have no problem with them only making it multiplayer. Sure the single player campaign was entertaining, but multiplayer is where 99% of those good memories came from. In fact, most of the bad memories I have of GoldenEye were protecting Natalia’s dumb ass as she lollygagged herself in and out of rooms filled with people trying to put her 6 feet deep. The rest of those bad memories likely involve being in a firefight while armed with only a Klobb, which did less damage than a Super Soaker 50, or a friend (now likely former friend) trying to defend selecting Oddjob in multiplayer. Probably the biggest pussy move in video game history.

My only actual beef with the game is that it’s only available for PC. I refused to buy anything Apple for years because of those stupid I’m a Mac, I’m a PC commercial. But then Apple made it’s way into my home first via the iPod, then the iPhone, then the iPad, and now poof I’m a full-blown Mac fan boy with a MacBook. However I did once buy a GameCube just so my roommate and I could play the newest Mario Kart while in college. I guess buying some cheap ass PC for a free, HD version of GoldenEye wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. Now I am stuck at home and jealous of all the cube monkeys that have a work PC with admin privileges. Because make no mistake about it, killing a close friend with remote or proximity mines in The Complex is definitely one of the few feelings on this planet that is better than sex.
