Bubba Says He Would Lay Up To Get A Bronze Medal Instead Of Going For It On The 18th Hole

SB Nation- Did you hear the one about Bubba Watson claiming he would lay up rather than go for the green in two on the 571-yard, par-5 18th hole if the Olympics bronze medal were at stake? No, really. One of the biggest bombers on the PGA Tour said Tuesday in Rio that he would rather take the risk out of the equation and come in third than possibly fall out of the medals race with a he-man shot. “I’m going to lay up and go for bronze,” Watson told reporters, who responded with amusement to what they apparently believed was a joke. It wasn’t. “Why is everybody laughing?” the two-time Masters champ wanted to know during the media scrum in which going for broke or settling for the reward rather than taking a risk at the end of the event was the subject of the moment. Watson, who countered teammate Rickie Fowler’s contention that “I don’t think we’re going to play safe by any means” with his contrarian view, was laying it on the line. Problem was, no one believed him. “I am actually serious,” he tried again and was again met with laughter. “No, it would be better to have bronze than nothing.”

I have a couple questions but they all pretty much lead to the same conclusion. Is Bubba saying he would lay up in order to not lose the bronze medal? Or is he saying he would lay up in order to get a bronze instead of going for it and potentially winning gold or silver? Are those the same thing? I don’t think they are but my stupid brain can’t seem to decide. Either way, he’s a giant pussy. Bronze medals are for pussies and are absolutely meaningless. If you’re not trying for gold, you’re not trying. Settling for bronze is not the American spirit. That’s not the spirit that made us the greatest country in the history of the universe. That’s not the spirit that caused us to give Great Britain the middle finger. Why is Bubba already talking about bronze medals when the golf event hasn’t even started yet? That’s a loser attitude. That’s the real problem.

I’m not shocked Bubba made these comments. I’m more disappointed than mad. He’s one of the few guys who should almost always go for it with his length and talent and he’s just like, “Meh. I’m happy with 3rd place.” Ya know what, Watson? Why don’t you just stay down in Rio.
