Daily News Goes In On Mets Fans For Cheering For Jose Reyes

The Daily News truly has mastered the art of subtlety! Tell us how you really feel! This isnt even the back cover. This is the front cover. On a day when the Democratic nominee for President was told by the FBI that no criminal charges will be pursued. Hilarious.

The thing is they’re absolutely not wrong. There’s absolutely no defending what Jose Reyes did. Very few details are known, but that doesnt matter. She didnt cooperate with police and no charges we filed, that doesnt matter. What we do know is that he grabbed her by the neck and threw her into a sliding door. That right there is enough. Thats a scumbag move. He’s a scumbag for doing it. Thats a black mark that you can never erase. You can ask for forgiveness. You can do everything right after the incident. You really can rehabilitate yourself or make things right with your victim, but you will always be judged as a wife beater. And thats completely fair. Reyes understands that. He’s said on multiple occasions he knows people are going to hate him and that he deserves it. The only thing I will defend about Reyes is that it appears he has done and has said everything right since the incident. He doesnt make excuses, he doesnt expect forgiveness or pity, hes owned it and wears it.

But fans are different than Reyes. The media and other fans are holding Mets fans to a standard that I just dont think is realistic. Mets fans look at Reyes and the first thing they see is triples and a cannon arm and reggaeton and Jose Jose Jose chants. They see that 2006 run and a home grown guy that came up right alongside David Wright. They dont see a domestic violence dispute. In Mets fans eyes, the nostalgia and the good memories outweigh one sentence of details of a dispute with his wife that they read in an article. I’m not saying its right, I’m saying its human nature. Maybe if there was video of the incident, but there isnt. Maybe if you’re a domestic violence survivor, but most people arent. If the world was perfect and everyone had their priorities straight, Jose Reyes wouldnt be cheered. But the world, and most people’s priorities, are fucked. Nobody cares that Aroldis Chapman was firing a gun like a madman. People ignore that most athletes are arrogant womanizers. Cocky entitled pricks. Money grubbing assholes. We tune into sports to forget about all the other shit, so we conveniently ignore their shortcomings that contribute to said “shit,” and just root for them on the TV. Again I want to be crystal clear – I’m not saying its right. Its just the way it is.

So for every think piece bashing Mets fans and every Yankees fans chirping at us and ever Daily News article and cover, just know – you’re not really wrong. Its that I just dont care. Sounds harsh and rude and fucked up but its true. I dont watch sports for role models. I can cheer for a guy on the field and acknowledge that he’s a scumbag off the field. People are still gonna go see Johnny Depp movies. People are still gonna listen to Chris Brown songs. Empire still crushes in the ratings despite Terence Howard being a Grade A piece of shit. None of that is “right,” but its all realistic because people just want to be entertained.
