Vocativ – [34-year-old former sugar baby] Taylor Jones says that over the past six years she has written more than 2,000 profiles for women using sugar baby dating sites like SeekingArrangement.com, and that she gets new clients every day. For $97 she customizes one of three profile templates that she’s developed—for sugars seeking an “allowance,” a “mentor,” or an “upgraded lifestyle.”

For $50 more, she throws in some more perks, including customization that her website says “makes your potential [Sugar Daddy] feel as though he is the ONE” and “as though you are reading his mind and the only one for him.”

What Jones, and a handful of other sugar baby ghostwriters, are doing is capitalizing on a knowledge swap that already takes place for free in the online sugar baby community. Popular Tumblrs like Sex Worker Helpfuls offer pointers on how to do everything from background checks to asking for an “allowance,” the term for monetary contributions given by sugar daddies to sugar babies. Profile writing is a big topic, with some aspiring sugar babies writing in to ask, as one woman did, “Why are sds viewing my profile but not actually contacting me on SA help pleaseeeeeee!!!!!”

Before long, word of her services spread through Tumblr, where a client wrote, “lemme tell y’all it’s fuckinh [sic] amazing she’s the best!!!” “It caught on pretty quickly, I wasn’t expecting it to—initially it was just for the small group of people I knew,” she said. Since then, she’s written dozens of profiles, she says. Sometimes, her clients are women for whom English is a second language, but often they just need help writing persuasively, she said.

I for one am shocked that women seeking either a career or side gig in squeezing money out of wealthy older men are lacking in written communication skills, a real curveball to the perception I had of them being all PhDs or literary scholars. But overall this seems like such a cheat of the process. Sugar daddy constructs are inherently weird as hell and appear to be no more than one step away from prostitution as is. But at least you could say “Well, they like my personality” and that might be valid in a lot of cases since that’s a big part of what the sugar daddy types want in contrast to their older dull wives. But with someone else doing the leg work, this isn’t even their personality now. Like I’m sure the bar for these dudes isn’t too high given that usually texting with a 20-year-old girl is an extremely vacuous process anyway but at least other girls hitting them with two word or acronym responses and emojis are being themselves. If you take out genuine personalities, all you have left is prostitution and frankly that’s making it an entirely different life choice for everyone involved.

Also when I was in college I learned from a girl in one class that a lot of girls in her sorority and presumably others had sugar daddies (though she swore she didn’t fuck hers, he just liked being seen in public with her…WINK) and I wasn’t sure if that was a “going to college in a major city” thing or a sign of the times. But now with how easy it is to both find people online AND transfer money in effortless and reckless ways it’s got to be simpler than ever to get paid as a sugar baby. There are probably chicks who’ll FaceTime some dude once a month and he’ll endlessly Venmo and ship gifts for her just for Snapchats of her wearing them. Like you can get away with that little work and you won’t even write your own fucking sugar daddy site profiles or messages? Come on girls. I don’t know how the old dudes indirectly but not really paying for pussy out there can live with this process.
