Victor Wembanyama Went Full Wilt Chamberlain And Produced One Of The Most Dominant Performances In NBA History
Ronald Cortes. Getty Images.Coming off his brutal NBA Finals, all eyes were on Victor Wembanyama entering this season. This was the year many believed he'd win his first MVP to go along with another DPOY, All NBA First Team, All NBA First Team Defense selection while also carrying the Spurs to the top of the NBA mountain. Between the media, the GM survey, the internet etc, the takeaway was mostly that this was Wemby's league.
He and the Spurs started a bit slow by their standards, but for the most part Wemby been getting back to the caliber of player that can truly take over the world. The Spurs are sitting at 6-2 which is a nice recovery from their 0-2 start, and Wemby himself looks like he's ready to back up all of his offseason hype based on what we just witnessed last night.
I'm talking about Wemby going full Wilt Chamberlain
The only other players in NBA history to ever have a 50+ point 20+ rebound and 8+ block game?

Bettmann. Getty Images.Wilt. He did 5 times between 1960-67. Wemby, just did it in Year 4. He's averaging 29/12/3, but has clearly now shown the ability to morph into Wilt when he needs to. And I get that this was against the Mavs, but whatever. I'm not sure it would have mattered who Wemby was facing based on what we watched. Remember, he did just have 43 against the Wolves and their elite defense, so I think it's OK to show some proper respect for one of the most insane state lines the NBA has ever seen.
Let's just think about this for a second. It's 2026. Wemby is the first player with 50/20/5 in over 50 years. He's the first player to have that final stat line in 60 years. Is it sinking in just how insane that is? Think of every NBA superstar we've had over the last 60 years. Some of the best players of ALL TIME. Not a single one of them did what Wemby did last night. I know it's cool to now hate on Wemby because of all the praise he gets and his quotes and all that stuff, but come on. You simply have to tip your cap to something like this. When a player does something that no other NBA player has done in 60 years, and the only other one who has done it is fucking Wilt Chamberlain, I have no choice but to respect it.
I'm sure some will try and discredit this performance by pointing out his 23 FTA (19-23), because that's what haters do. I look at that as Wemby figuring out how to add FTA rate to his offensive bag. It's not as if he lives at the line, he has just 2 double digit FTA games this season. He also only made 1 3PM in this performance which is pretty crazy, because usually these scoring outbursts include multiple 3PMs.
While Luka has certainly played like ther early season MVP, it's hard to ignore Wemby in the rearview mirror. He's closing fast, especially if he continues to do shit like this and the Spurs continue to win. When performances like this happen, it sort of makes sense why everyone expects MVP/DOY/1st Team All NBA for Wemby and a title for the Spurs. A combined 10 STOCKS in a single game is absurd, but for Wemby it's the norm. Seems pretty good!
Now if he could just have these types of performances is the Spring and not early November, the Spurs might be ready to break through and win the whole damn thing.
