WATCH: This Marching Band Drummer Stuck Spinning In A Gyroscope Fucking ROCKS And Now I Need These Units At Every Concert Moving Forward
Giphy Images.Bet you didn't expect to wake up and see the very definition of an ELECTRIC FACTORY this morning! What an incredible feat of furious musical magic from that high school above. Even if I don't understand the point of its function whatsoever. Big Tommy Lee vibes for sure and that's what matters most. Maybe the kids are alright after all?
All I know is, DUDES fuckin' ROCK. And that's enough for me. But apparently this drummer gyro doohickey has elite allure in the marching band community. Here's another shining example from Alabama that went viral a few years ago. The more you know!
(SOURCE) - Earlier this football season, Homewood High School band drummer Jack Mitchell performed his drum line routine while spinning around in a giant neon gyroscope. The video has since gone viral on TikTok, with over 8 million views and 500,000 likes as of today.
The idea for this amazing stunt came from Homewood band director Chris Cooper, who had seen the concept being done before and wanted to see if he could do it better. “Last October, someone in Mississippi had this gyroscope for sale and I just went ‘I want it.’My dad and I drove to Jackson, MS and bought it. I didn’t tell my staff, I didn’t tell my assistant director, I didn’t tell my drum instructor–I just showed up with it. There’s something about Jack where I just knew he was the right kid to do it. He’s the kid that made the magic happen. We didn’t even have a try-out.”

(SOURCE) - Homewood isn't the first school to use a gyro. But video of last week’s show went viral. A pep rally showcased that Jack Mitchell has a lot of energy when he's drumming. He said he just tries to put on a good show. “Homewood leans very much in showmanship. We pride ourselves on putting on the best show we can possibly do. And that means me hyping out my personality before the show. So I get out there, and I'm like, you know, it's all about playing up the personality, you know, getting the people out in the field hyped because that's for the whole band,"
Mitchell said moving from drumming on flat ground to drumming while in a spinning contraption took some getting used to, but he figured it out. He said, “That's probably the number one question I'm asked is do you get dizzy? And the answer is yes. But as long as you focus in on one point, don't look around. I don't eat beforehand. As long as I do those, I'm all set.”
Although I still don't quite understand the reasoning behind using a gyroscope. Perhaps some marching band savvy Stoolie can provide some context in the comment section. Every article I've read so far refuses to give context and only provides praise for how cool is looks. Certainly fair, albeit not helpful
Giphy Images.HOWEVA, I did learn that the 1st documented cases of upside down drummers came around 1975 from Buddy Rich & then Jack Valentine & Mick Mars. Shout out to those pioneering trailblazers of drumline dementia. Good stuff.
And if you want to see a POV look at how drumming inside that gyro feels, this intrepid neckbeard has you covered below. What a world indeed. Humans are so goddamn dumb. But what beautiful chaos we end up creating out there. Have a rockin' weekend!

PS: who knew Buddy Rich & Mick Mars would end up having so much influence over the video game streaming era? Time IS a flat circle.
