Nathan Fielder's New Movie Can And SHOULD Be The First Documentary Nominated For Best Picture

Thirty-four days before she's sent to prison, notorious Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait becomes a mind-bending three-year journey.

Every time I think that he has found the upper limit, Nathan Fielder proves me wrong.

His superpower is asking a question and letting people stew in silence after their answer. This dead air is the syringe he uses to extract the most insane, unique collection of words you’ve ever heard in your life. Just let people talk!

Using this superpower, he elicits some of the funniest, unscripted lines you ever hear in your life.

Throughout the movie, he unravels the psychology not just of Holmes but also himself, asks questions about manipulation, language, guilt, what true love is. I also feel like we’re pretty used to seeing Fielder run circles around his subjects, but Holmes really feels like a mental match for him. Maybe in the way Biden was to Trump via the Gillis bit, but still.

It's a hard movie to talk about without spoilers, but the three hours WHIZZ by with plenty of twists and turns along the way. I feel Fielder has found an incredible director for his type of storytelling in Lance Oppenheim as well. Beautiful cinematography, complimentary music that adds to every moment and really sharp editing.

I think it's one of the best movies of 2026 so far and, like the title says, I fully endorse it becoming the first documentary nominated for best picture and would be totally ok with it winning (so far).
