Road Life in the SEC Is Not for the Faint: Week 5 CFB Recap
- Mizzou Torches Florida
Man, what an ass whoopin' it was on Saturday afternoon in Columbia, Missouri. Florida came in No. 8 in the country, putting up 50 points every game and everyone telling them how great they were. The problem seems to be that nobody told Missouri they weren't supposed to go out there and absolutely beat the hell out of the Gators. Every road trip in the SEC this season is going to be a nightmare.
Jamal Roberts — who's supposed to be Mizzou's backup running back behind Ahmad Hardy — ran it down Florida's throat all day to the tune of 211 yards and three touchdowns and Austin Simmons continued to look really impressive at quarterback. The Tigers get Texas A&M at home next week before going to Ole Miss in what could be a huge game for one of the SEC's final College Football Playoff spots.
- Mississippi State Wasn't Ready for the Moment
Sometimes the lights are just too bright.
Mississippi State had an opportunity to make a statement in Starkville that would have reverberated throughout the college football world. It instead went out with a whimper.
To be clear, there's no shame in losing to this Alabama team. Keelon Russell is a stud and it seems Kalen DeBoer might have things rolling in Tuscaloosa again. It just would have been nice to see a better performance from Kamario Taylor and the gang. They'll get another shot, though, as they head to LSU in two weeks following a bye.
- The Bryce Underwood Experiment Is Over
Bryce Underwood's name will likely be remembered for a long time in college football, but it won't be because he was a great player. It will be because he set the 5-star quarterback market back years.
The staff that recruited Underwood is now gone, his new coach needs to win games and he can't throw. I don't know how much longer Kyle Whittingham can possibly leave him out there. Even the most bearish prognostications on Underwood's college career couldn't have looked like this.
- Jeremiah Smith Does It Again
Ho hum, just another 200-yard, two touchdown performance from Jeremiah Smith en route to setting the Ohio State career receptions and receiving touchdowns records in less than 2.5 seasons. He's out-pacing Devonta Smith's Heisman season by a lot through each player's first five games.
If he wins the Heisman and finishes with 4,000 yards and more than 40 touchdowns in three seasons, he might be the best to ever do it.
- Cardiac Cats
Will Stein is a ball coach, man. I hope and trust he will not be at Kentucky for very long.
The Wildcats trailed South Carolina 17-0 on the road and came all the way back to force overtime, where they won on a walk-off two-point conversion — a great call from Stein, who understands you should go for it every time if you're the second team to score in OT.
LSU goes to Lexington next weekend in one of the most fascinating games on the board. Lane better have his guys ready to go.
