Digger Is Loud, Unfunny & Wants To Lecture You

There are a lot of good movies in the theaters right now. Digger is certainly not one of them. I have a mini-review of the new Tom Cruise stinker below as well as Resident Evil, Primetime, Heart Of The Beast and The Weight.

Digger thinks it’s the smartest guy in the room. It’s not. It also thinks it’s the funniest guy in the room. It’s certainly not either. Instead, it’s loud, obnoxious and wants to lecture you. This has the nuance and subtly of an over served college student.

At its heart, it wants to be a farce without having the balls to stand by it. It’s just clearly made by people who aren’t funny.

While I do dislike this movie quite a bit, I can’t bring myself to hate it. The production design is excellent and Tom Cruise gives a good performance.

What’s the Family Guy joke? The Godfather insists upon itself? Somehow, Digger actually does.

DIGGER: D+

Primetime is the most complicated movie of 2026. I’m having a really hard time giving a review because I’m not sure how I even feel about it. 

Let’s tackle the good. The performances here are elite. Robert Pattinson, Merritt Wever and Skyler Gisondo could all get Oscar nominations. It’s also an interesting movie. That’s not easy to make.

My issue with the movie is it’s so hellbent on proving how the media, ambition and fame can all fly in the face of being a good person, it ends up making the pedophiles they are hunting to be sympathetic at times. Chris Hansen being the monster in a movie where people who hurt children are also in it just doesn’t work. 

This is absolutely something you should see for yourself though. This is a well made movie. You may feel very differently. Personally though, I left feeling uncomfortable with what I saw.

PRIMETIME: C+

I love dogs. I’ve owned a dog for almost 20 years now and they’ve been such a bright spot in my life. Heart Of The Beast also loves and respects dogs. If you love dogs, this is a must see.

This movie is pretty simple. Retired Green Beret with his trained military dog stuck in the woods trying to get back to civilization. That’s the movie. But it works. This is an ideal movie for David Ayer. He’s at his best with less frills. The simpler the situation, the better he is. This is my new favorite Ayer movie.

You also need a movie star to carry this movie and you have one in Brad Pitt. It’s just him and a dog out there so you need an actor you can become fully invested in and Pitt delivers.

Uber the dog (who plays Odin) is perfect. Bring your Kleenex though. I cried more in this movie than every movie this year combined.

HEART OF THE BEAST: B

I like this movie. This is a good movie. It’s just not great and a big dropoff for Zach Cregger especially from Weapons (which was great) and even Barbarian (which is very good). Maybe it’s unfair, but I walked away a little disappointed.

There are things to like about this. Austin Abrams does a nice job and has to carry this movie. He’s likable and believable. The pace is frenetic and keeps this exciting throughout.

It’s just too goofy for me. Weapons had characters with real emotions and was a movie that gave you a lot to chew on even days later. Resident Evil wanted to take a sillier approach.

When you make great movies, you get held to a higher standard. That’s the burden. Hopefully Cregger got this out of his system and can go back to do amazing work again.

RESIDENT EVIL: B-

The Weight is a good action movie. It’s a combination of Sorcerer and Deliverance but isn’t as good as either movie. It doesn’t do anything special but also does everything pretty well. Mix in a strong Ethan Hawke performance and this is an easy recommend for me.

It’s a shame Russell Crowe isn’t in this movie more. When he’s on screen the movie jumps up a level. He’s become this fantastic supporting character in his later years and I’ve liked some of these projects he’s been doing.

I can’t say enough good things about Ethan Hawke. It doesn’t matter the time period or the genre. You’re going to believe him in any role he does and isn’t just one of the most versatile actors of the this century but also one of its best.
