The Round Of His Life: Tom Kim Is Up 1 Heading Into The Final Round Of The Asian Games, Needs To Win To Earn An Exemption From Mandatory Military Service

I'm sure by now everyone is familiar with the South Korean mandatory military service. Tom Kim is far from the first notable person to have this:

Now you have different ways to be exempt from the 18-21 mandatory service. That includes winning. Tom Kim could have been exempt at the Olympics when he just missed out on a medal:

But now he's got another chance. Well, two really. Either he wins gold or his South Korea team wins gold. In both scenarios they are in the lead heading into the final round, up 1 in each. I don't know how you sleep tonight. Again, I'm aware it's a different sort of military service and we've seen guys like Sonny do it. But, the point remains. You have a chance to be exempt if you hold a 1-shot lead. There's already pressure in any sort of golf tournament when you're up 1 going into the final round. Now throw this in there?

Think about the fact he went directly from the Presidents Cup, where he played a ton, to the Asian Games. There's no time for rest or anything else. Now it comes down to the round of his life. You hold the lead and you're exempt with a gold medal. This is also the difference (among many) between us and someone like Tom Kim. I'm missing that first tee shot tomorrow. If I'm around the green early, it's gonna look like this

Good luck to Tom and good luck getting any sort of sleep tonight. One round, the most important round of your life coming up.
