The NBA Season Hasn't Even Started Yet And Giannis Is Already Talking About A World Where He Leaves The Miami Heat

For the last few years, Pat Riley and the Miami Heat have been searching for their next blue chip/franchise caliber player. Every year, we would hear about how they are interested in every single player under the sun, but they never closed the deal, preferring to make some marginal changes and continue run things back. Since their 2023 Finals run (lost in 5), they've been bounced in Round 1 twice, and then missed the playoffs last year. Not good enough to contend, but not shitty enough to truly tank and land a high lottery pick. In a sense, they were stuck in NBA purgatory.

With the Giannis trade, Pat Riley finally landed his white whale. The Heat finally cashed in on their players/assets and brought in a certified difference-maker (when healthy) to lead the Heat and team up with Bam. Given that Giannis is the best player who changed teams this offseason, all eyes are on the Heat this upcoming season. The days of having the excuse of not having a top tier player other than Bam are over. With that, comes real expectations to not just get past the first round, but to actually contend for a title. That's the standard that this era of the Heat will have to play to, given the player they just added. It's no different from any of the other contender hopefuls that made major moves to add talent this summer, and that's just how impactful Giannis can be when he's on the floor.

Will that happen? Who knows. That's why they play the games. But what we do know is that the NBA season hasn't even started yet and Giannis is already talking about a world where potentially he's only on the Heat for a year or two before going somewhere else…..wait what?

Look, fair is fair. As any Bucks fan will tell you, if Giannis had given this exact quote as a Buck, all the talk would be about how he's already looking to leave etc. I would absolutely write that blog. So in the spirit of fairness, Heat fans are now going to have to deal with the same thing. It's part of the gig when you get into the Giannis business. Now they'll have to be the ones who try and spinzone it like things got lost in translation or whatever and that he's not really saying the things he's saying out loud in front of cameras and microphones. Because let's be honest, that is NOT something you would want to hear entering a new season when the player you traded for has only been on your team for a few months. Where's the language about being a Heat for the rest of his career? Even if it's pandering, that's what this time of year is for. Instead, Giannis is already laying the groundwork for a potential exit.

Now, this is where I should probably mention that Giannis can't even sign his extension to remain in MIA until January 6th. Based on how things work, he has to wait 6 months to sign following his trade. So even if he does want to extend, by rule he can't until we get to 2027. I also have to imagine Pat Riley & Co got the verbal commitment of an extension well before the trade, because even if you think he's senile and asleep at the wheel, there's NO WAY Pat Riley does that trade without it. You don't give up that collection of assets just for a player to leave for nothing after this season. But what if things don't go great and we get to January and Giannis doesn't sign that extension? Then what? I'd give that a 0.000000000001% chance of happening, but this is the NBA we're talking about here. Crazy shit happens all the damn time. 

Between that reality and then Giannis himself talking about a world where he's only with the Heat for one or two years, all I'm saying is you can't rule it out. Just like we could never rule out Giannis leaving the Bucks despite all times he tried to act like he'd never leave. Let's also not forget, immediately after the trade Giannis was already talking about potentially going back to the Bucks one day

so when you add that to his comments from Day 2 of the Heat's training camp, it only adds more speculation. And while I'm sure Heat fans won't want to hear it or even acknowledge it, just ask Bucks fans how this goes. The first time the Heat have a skid or things don't go well, every single Giannis quote will be dissected and if it happens before the extension, then questions around his future will come. That's just how it goes when it comes to Giannis.
