Insidious: Out Of The Further Is A Stale Chore To Get Through

Insidious: Out Of The Further is a stale chore of a movie. I have a mini-review of that below along with Toy Story 5, The End Of Oak Street, Tony, Nimrods and The Brink Of War. Luckily, those are all better movies.

Insidious: Out Of The Further is such a chore. It’s a reminder how far the horror genre has come in the last 15 years. We’ve been spoiled with creative and intelligent scary movies like Obsession and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This is certainly not that.

It checks all of the cliche boxes. Single parent with a gift that she can pass on to her kid. The undead trying to get to our world. Dream sequences galore. This movie leads the league in creepy things in the background.

It’s all been done before and it’s not even done well here. The acting is lousy. It’s all cheap, uninspired “thrills”. I don’t care about anyone in this movie. Why should I be scared?

Hopefully this relic is the death rattle of stale horror.

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER: D

Toy Story 5 proves (again) that this franchise is (along with Spider-Man) is the rare sure thing in film. You just always get a quality movie every time these characters are on screen.

What I appreciate most from these movies is how they are for everyone. And that’s not because they force in awkward “adult” jokes. Instead, you get layered situations that can offer different perspectives depending how old you are.

This one tackles technology and how we deal with being pushed aside by our kids once they get older. It’s done with the typical Toy Story kindness and care. The animation continues to be very detailed and strong.

The only reason I don’t have this higher is that I’m only going to enjoy this so much. This is still the second best family movie this year (behind Sheep Detectives). If you’re looking for something in this genre, this is very good. I just have a low ceiling for these kinds of movies.

TOY STORY 5: B

I really enjoyed The End Of Oak Street. When I was growing up in the 1980’s, cartoons just weren’t that popular. It was movies like this that made me fall in love with going to the theater. Exciting escapism with good performances. Isn’t this the reason we leave a sunny beach to go to a dark theater in the summer?

I appreciated the brisk run time and pacing throughout. The action never lets up for too long and the times it does, you care about these characters so much that you enjoy just spending time with them.

Anne Hathaway is great…yet again. I also loved the Ewen MacGregor character. Is this going to be among the best picture nominees at the end of the year? Obviously not. It’s a fun popcorn thriller. But I’ll say this: I bet it does what it tries to do better than some of those films that are nominated.

THE END OF THE OAK STREET: B+

Tony is one of the most relatable and interesting biopics you’ll see. This wisely chooses a specific point in time as opposed to trying to fit an entire life into a 120 minute run time.

Dominic Sessa is fantastic as a young Bourdain. He’s pouty and aggravating but you root for him because he’s trying his best to figure it all out. We’ve all felt like that as a young person trying to figure out where we fit into the world. You feel like you have all the answers but really don’t know how anything actually works.

Along with Sessa, you get Oscar-level performances from Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas. These are some of the best characters you’ll see in a movie all year. You wish both were in it more and the weakest parts of the movie are when they aren’t around.

This is also about work. Along with BlackBerry, Matt Johnson has made another fantastic movie about doing a job. Tie those with Nirvanna: The Band, The Show, The Movie and he’s become one of my favorite active directors.

TONY: B+

The Brink Of War probably should have been an 85 minute movie. There’s just not enough movie here at times. The script knows this and repeats the same thing sometimes 4 or 5 times.

It’s a shame because this could have been very good in different hands. I also like this way of telling history. I hate the cradle to the grave biopic. You can’t tell an 80 year life in a 130 minute movie.

But snapshots of important moments can work. It did in Argo and at times, it works here. The third act is the best part of the movie. JK Simmons and Jared Harris are good as well. Jeff Daniels in this is how I imagine Ronald Reagan would have done a Jeff Daniels impression. But it’s fine.

Keep making movies like this! Even when it doesn’t totally hit like this or September 5, you’re getting an interesting story and it’s still better than most movies.

THE BRINK OF WAR: C+

Nimrods has a big heart but it also almost aggressively stupid. I walked out of the theater thinking that Green Day deserved better (even though they were very involved and even helped write this).

Your appreciation and patience for this movie will be tied to how much you like Green Day. If you truly love the band, you’ll probably pick up on more of the inside jokes than I did. I do like them so I was able to tolerate the lousy script and enjoy the music (the best part of the movie by far).

I like Mason Thames and having Fred Armisen and McKenna Grace pop up help make this entertaining in those brief scenes. But there are too many other dead spots and really dumb things happening to recommend this to everyone.

But if you love Green Day, you should absolutely see this.
