Utah Is Suing Kyle Whittingham's Brother For Recruiting His Own Players To Michigan While On Utah's Staff
Another day, another Michigan* scandal. I honestly thought this was over with once they got rid of Coach Butterknives and brought in a grandpa that does even use the H word (hate). But apparently once you put on the Maize and Blue, I guess even people from Utah, who sit around drinking 3.2% beer and as they read the book of Joseph Smith, turn into the devil.
So what Utah is apparently suing for here is a breach of contract from Kyle Whittingham's brother, Freddie. And here's what they're saying he did:
- Freddie Whittingham failed to devote “full-time attention and energy” to being a coach for the Utah football program.
- He never received written consent from Utah before engaging with the Wolverines about an assistant coaching position in Ann Arbor in January, as required by his contract.
- Freddie Whittingham didn’t provide the Utes with written notice of his resignation before accepting his new position with the Wolverines.
- He did not pay the “liquidated damages” required by his contract after leaving for Michigan.
Now let me show that I'm a fair and honest journalist with this next take: I do not give a fuck about any of the bullet points above. If you didn't think Kyle Whittingham was bringing his brother to Utah with him then I've got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. So if he owes some money, fine, pay the money. But what I think is the biggest issue in this lawsuit is that it has brought to light a much more serious topic: Michigan cheating once again
In another claim, Utah alleges that Freddie Whittingham was actively recruiting Utah players to join Michigan while still employed by Utah.
Five Utah players who entered the NCAA transfer portal ultimately committed to Michigan, including tight end JJ Buchanan.
Now am I shocked? No, shocked wouldn't be the word. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to the Liars and the Cheaters. But did I think Kyle Whittingham's own kin would be walking around the Utah facility encouraging their best players to head on over to Ann Arbor? No, I didn't think that either.
The Kyle Whittingham that I saw at Big Ten Media Days truly seemed like a stand-up guy. In fact, if we're in the Trust Tree here, I left feeling a little annoyed that I might not be able to say mean and ruthless things about him because he appeared (at the time) to be a genuinely good person. But now I come to find out that his very own brother was showing up each and every day with a block M undershirt beneath that Utes Football polo, while completely abandoning his job duties to start actively recruit his best players to go to another school?
They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I think that's about a dad and son though. So what would this be? The apple doesn't fall from another apple that fell from the same tree?
Either way, I think you need to take away Michigan's 2023 Championship* for this one.
