Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Another Example Of The Most Consistently Entertaining Franchise In Movies

Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivers exactly what you want from a Spider-Man movie: an entertaining summer blockbuster. There is a mini-review of this below along with Motor City, The Death Of Robin Hood and The Christophers. Those three are all smaller movies but each deserve a watch.

Spider-Man might be the most consistently entertaining franchise in movies. I give Marvel a lot of shit but they really nailed the casting of Tom Holland. He’s such a great and likable Spider-Man. This movie delivered exactly what I expected from it.

Where does it rank among the other Marvel/Sony Spider-Man movies? I don’t know…2nd? 3rd? 4th? They are all about the same quality level. That’s a compliment. This one had a different director but it didn’t really matter. It has a couple different looks but at the end of the day, the difference is barely noticeable.

My only true critique with this is how it looks at times. They so want New York City to be a character in this movie yet Marvel never wants to shoot in NYC. Instead, you get a disjointed setting for most of the movie. If you’re going to spend this much money making this, why not make it look as good as it can?

That’s a relatively minor thing though. This is a very entertaining summer blockbuster and if you enjoyed the previous Spider-Man movies, rush out and see this one.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY: B+

Motor City is a good action flick that is both helped and hindered by its gimmick. There are maybe 12 lines of dialogue in the entire movie. At times, you barely notice it as the strong performances by Pablo Schreiber, Ben Foster and Shailene Woodley carry the narrative with great physical acting.

Other times, the movie would have been better off with just having people speak. It’s unnatural to have characters stay silent at times and it takes you out of the movie.

This is a boilerplate “one man takes revenge” movie so I do appreciate adding a wrinkle to it. The thing is, this is a good movie and didn’t need to entirely rely on a crutch.

I still recommend this. This has a great 70’s soundtrack and some fantastic action sequences. You’ve seen this type of a movie dozens of times, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check something like this out.

MOTOR CITY: B-

The Christophers is a good, little movie that has been a calling card of late for Steven Soderbergh. I did like Presence and Black Bag more than this but this is still worth seeing.

This is the second straight movie for Michaela Cole where she is dealing with a very successful person in a dialogue heavy movie. Thankfully, this is much better than Mother Mary. That movie felt like such a pointless exercise while this has a lot to stay about success and guilt.

Watching it, it felt like this would be a better play than a movie. It’s mostly at one location and as great as McKellen was here, would that performance been more powerful on stage?

Regardless, I’m glad this got made and I hope Soderbergh keeps making these little gems.

THE CHRISTOPHERS: B-

The Death Of Robin Hood had no business being released in the summer. When most people are looking for fun escapes, this seems to revel in being a brutal deconstruction of a legend filled with deserved self-hatred. 

So while I don’t get why this was released in June (or at all? Are people asking for a Robin Hood movie?), I’m sure glad it did. Hugh Jackman continues a fantastic run where he gives yet another excellent performance in a very different movie (Song Sung Blue, The Sheep Detectives and now this).

This clearly is very influenced by Unforgiven and isn’t close to as good. But, that’s a really unfair bar. This is absolutely worth seeing and I’m just glad writer/director Michael Sarnoski made a good movie again after the dreadful A Quiet Place: Day One.
