The Odyssey Is An Absolute Masterpiece

Christopher Nolan has made yet another incredible movie. I have a mini-review of The Odyssey along with Jackass: Best & Last, Gail Daughtry & The Celebrity Sex Pass and Evil Dead Burn.

The Odyssey is so incredible, it made me love a fantasy epic. I typically hate this genre. Between the dialogue and the storytelling, I find similar-themed movies to be usually just so removed and not relatable. Christopher Nolan is such a brilliant filmmaker that I’ve finally can call a sword and sandals movie truly great.

This doesn’t hit the heights of Oppenheimer, Inception or The Dark Knight for me but it is firmly in my text tier of Nolan movies. There are three incredible action sequences in the first hour that would be the greatest scene of 98% of all movies. The scope of this movie is so stunning. I wonder if this how people felt after watching Lawrence Of Arabia in the 1960’s.

If someone told me this was their favorite movie of the decade, I couldn’t argue at all. I have Oppenheimer and Project Hail Mary among a couple others in front of it. But that’s just a matter of personal taste and preference and nothing to do with film quality.

This will get a gigantic amount of deserving Oscar nominations including for Best Picture, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and nearly every technical award. We are blessed to have Christopher Nolan making movies.

THE ODYSSEY: A

Jackass: Best And Last wasn’t the best and hopefully won’t be the last. This is a fun hangout with an entertaining group of guys. Part clip show/part new stuff, it just never feels like you’re get them close to when they were giving 100%. But, this still has a bunch of laughs and worth seeing.

This group has also earned enough good will to give us a not full effort. Normally I’d be up in arms over a clip show disguised as a movie. Maybe I should be here too? 

You know what? The stunts over the years and the dedication in the past is still on the screen. These are the Buster Keatons of this era. I never rolled my eyes seeing the same stunts he did a couple times. I’ll sit back and enjoy these guys giving me a great rerun here too.

JACKASS: BEST AND LAST: B

Gail Daughtry & The Celebrity Sex Pass might be the most fine movie that’s ever existed. I was mildly entertained throughout the entire movie. I’m still not sure if that’s a compliment or an insult but it does appear to be the film’s intent.

I really loved Role Models and think it’s one of the best comedies of the last 20 years. So for me, this is a big dropoff from David Wain. But, he didn’t seem to want to make something as funny as Role Models here. This wants to be cute, silly with a couple chuckles thrown in.

Don’t get me wrong. I do recommend this movie. I just think the people involved are capable of something more. This is like a being in a car that won’t go above a certain gear. It’s a comfortable enough ride though.

GAIL DAUGHTRY & THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS: B-

Evil Dead Burn is shocking gore for shocking gore’s sake. If that interests you, then you might like this. This is not a poorly made movie. I don’t like that so I kinda hated this.

If gore advances the plot of the movie, then that can be great. There have been some very good movies like Weapons and Obsession that have used gore very well. This movie seems to exist only because of the gore. Killing a dog isn’t entertaining because it’s shocking. 

Maybe it’s tone here. This is a nasty movie. Final Destination movies use shocking gore too but do it in a funnier fashion. The Evil Dead movies aren’t as playful. This one seemed especially cruel.

I just may not be the audience for this. I also didn’t like the torture porn in movies like Hostel either. Felt a similar way watching this.
