The Sheep Detectives Is Much Better Than Mortal Kombat 2

When it comes to which is a better movie, The Sheep Detectives commits a fatality on Mortal Kombat 2. I have mini-reviews of both as well as Hokem, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Over Your Dead Body. All of those are better than Mortal Kombat 2 as well. Mortal Kombat 2 kinda sucks.

Mortal Kombat 2 is better than the original. It should get credit for that, I suppose. It’s faint praise because the first one that came out 4 years ago was dreadful. But, this is still better.

It’s somehow less of a movie though. This is just constant fight scenes. By the end of the criminal 116 minute run time, you feel as beaten down as the people you’re watching. There might be 18 fight scenes in this. Maybe it’s 15. I don’t know. It doesn’t matter. People end up coming back to life too.

Adding Karl Urban does help. He’s a fine actor and the rest of this cast is pretty rough. The dialogue is atrocious again but once again, better than the original.

It’s kind of a shame. I still think with these interesting Mortal Kombat characters, there could be a decent movie to be made. But maybe no one really wants that.

Mortal Kombat 2: D+

The Sheep Detectives is a kind, sweet movie that people of any age can really enjoy. It has strong human performances led by Hugh Jackman and as ridiculous as it sounds, you really care for these sheep.

It actually does an impressive amount of world building. It introduces quite a few sheep with different personalities and you get emotionally invested in them. They were wise to build a strong human cast which includes Molly Gordon, Nicholas Braun and Emma Thompson.

This has similarities in tone and feel to the Paddington movies and that’s a very high compliment. There won’t be many better family movies that come out this year.

The Sheep Detectives: B+

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is an enjoyable, confident movie with elite actors. That’s not a bad way to spend a couple hours.

I appreciated that this movie was mostly about work. It also didn’t need to lecture us. You never heard that girl power was going to save the day or that fashion was important and here’s why! Instead, it respected the audience enough to just have smart women on the screen working hard.

Anne Hathaway is so easy to root for and Meryl Streep is the perfect balance to Hathaway’s enthusiasm. Also, Stanley Tucci is great in the quiet moments of a loud movie.

This is a movie that isn’t aiming for greatness but being entertaining and knows exactly what it is. I found it to be refreshing. This wasn’t made for me but I still was entertained.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: B-

Hokum is a solid horror movie that relies on actual scares and a strong acting performance. What more can you ask for with a smaller movie like this?

You care about Adam Scott so much that (at times) you struggle to buy he’s a grumpy writer. That affection for him works really well here though. He’s playing a tourist in Ireland but because he’s the only face you recognize, you feel that way too. This is a good script that never tries to re-invent the wheel. It just wants to make a quality one.

So many horror movies fall apart in the third act but because it works hard to build up the characters and setting earlier on, by the end everything feels earned here. This is worth seeing.

Hokum: B

Over Your Dead Body is a solid dark comedy with good lead actors and a decent enough script. This might be the perfect definition of a fine movie ever made. This almost feels like a throwback to movies from the 1990’s when you’d get quality movies a few times a month that existed not to blow your mind or be streaming trash but could live in that middle ground. It was made simply to entertain.

Jason Segal and Samara Weaving make a believable couple despite wanting to kill each other. Sometimes the movie tries to hard to be a “dark” but high quality supporting actors like Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis balance that out.

I liked this. You should see it. But you don’t need to drop everything to do so.
