"He's Not an Expert, He's a Fan With an Audience", You Will NOT Catch Ronda Rousey Putting Respect on Joe Rogan's Name Anytime Soon
First of all, masterclass of an interview there, Bert. When your guest gives you big glaring "THIS WILL MAKE NEWS" type of quote, it's important to laugh nervously and change the topic as quickly as possible.
I don't typically go out of my way to defend Joe Rogan, but that's such a typical hardo athlete stance to take. To completely dismiss the idea that someone might know something about a sport they've never competed in at the highest level. Maybe she's right in this situation, but Joe Rogan wouldn't have to be a real fighter to have a general understanding of how long it would take to train someone up. He's been commentating the UFC forever. He's obsessed with the sport. He's surely seen fighters of varying ages and skill levels start from scratch and work their way up to... whatever level they end up peaking at. He's probably seen women train with men, and would have an idea of what level the average dude would have to get to in order to compete with the best female fighters in the world.
Although I do appreciate a good ol' fashioned grudge. Ronda Rousey really must hate Joe Rogan. There was no reason to bring that up at all. It's not like Bert asked a leading question to pull it out of her. All Bert did was mention his name. Based on that video, Ronda is clearly still not over the way she was treated by the MMA media following her infamous loss to Holly Holm.
Here's a quote from her in an interview last year with Chris Cuomo:
SI – "It was really disappointing to see how happily everybody turned on me and how people like Joe Rogan, who were crying in the ring about the honor of being able to call my fights, people I considered friends in the media so quickly turned on me," Rousey said of the media's reception to her UFC losses. "I also am kind of grateful for it in a way because it forced me to separate other people’s perception of me from my own perception of myself. ... I do not enjoy being paparazzi famous. I hate it."
She's mad about the way she was cast aside after the fight. Mad about the number of people who reached out to her. Mad that nobody mentioned how she suffered a concussion from falling down some stairs leading up to that Holly Holm fight.
"My mouth guard was bad,” Rousey admitted. “I literally came into that fight concussed from slipping down some stairs already after all these years of concussions. Then I had an absolutely terrible weight cut, which means you have less fluid in your brain to protect it.”
"The MMA media hates me. Not a single person has called me or anything like that. They've all just doubled down and said that I'm making excuses or lying or blowing things out of proportion, or not giving credit where it's due. … I'm not waiting for it [the call] and I get that they're a bunch of a**holes."
So it's still "Fuck Joe Rogan" I guess. Ronda Rousey must have sat down in that interview looking for a way to slander him. And again, she might be right in this situation. Joe Rogan might not have the slightest fucking clue on a question like that. But it's not because he never fought. Whenever an athlete resorts to making that point, it usually just means they don't have any real points to fall back on. If they can just cut someone's argument off at the knees with a "You never fought so you wouldn't know!", then they never actually have to refute anything they say. No matter how good of a point they might make. It's a break glass in case of emergency trump card to pull out in an argument (i.e. it's a cop out).
Except in this case, there wasn't even an argument. Just an unprovoked shot at Joe Rogan's entire existence and the thing he loves most. "Oh Joe Rogan? That fraudulent pussy? Please…"
