Being Fired After A Win Should Be The New Norm
Instead of beating a dead horse and ranting for the millionth time about how watching Billy Napier call plays made me want to gouge my eyes out and let people use them as toilets because that’s exactly what it felt like, I’m going to look at the bright side for once. Getting fired after a win is actually kind of sick.
Anyone who follows Florida football knew that, win or lose, Billy Napier was cooked. The writing had been on the wall for weeks. The fan base knew it, the boosters knew it, hell, even Billy probably knew it. So when Florida went out and pulled off a wild homecoming thriller against Brandon Walker’s Mississippi State Bulldogs, and then Napier got canned shortly after, it was almost poetic.
And honestly? I love it. More teams should do this. Everyone always waits until the end of the year or after some brutal loss to pull the trigger, but why? When you know someone’s not the guy, when you’ve seen enough to realize they can’t get you over the hump, why drag it out? Coaches get those sympathy wins every year, beating some bum ass team late in the season and suddenly everyone’s talking about “momentum” and “growth.” Meanwhile, anyone with eyes knows it’s just fugazi. Florida didn’t fall for that. They ripped the band aid off right after a win, and I respect that.
Think about it, getting fired already sucks. Everyone hates you, your reputation’s taking a hit, and you’ve got to give some sad goodbye speech to a room full of guys who already moved on emotionally. But getting fired after a loss? That’s misery. You’re going home depressed, replaying every bad call in your head. Getting fired after a win, though? That’s different. That’s going out on top, well, sort of. You leave with your head high, a win under your belt, and a nice fat buyout check in your pocket.
It’s like breaking up with someone after one last round of sex. You both know it’s over, but at least you leave on good terms, maybe even smiling. Billy Napier didn’t get his fairytale ending, but he got the next best thing, a victory, a payout, and a one way ticket to anywhere but Gainesville. If that’s not the dream way to get fired, I don’t know what is.
