Should Girlfriends Try To Be Involved On NFL Sunday Or Just Let Him Have His Day?
Me and Annika got into a heated debate about whether girlfriends should be involved during NFL Sundays and apparently, my answer broke her brain. I don’t get why. I wasn’t saying anything crazy. I just said that if a girl wants to be involved, she should be. That can mean a lot of different things, rooting for your guy’s team, sitting through his endless rants about how the head coach should be fired, or just hanging out and pretending to care when his team gets boat raced for the fifth straight week.
But I also said something that apparently made me the villain of the story: if you don’t want to watch football, you can still make the experience better. Maybe bring out some snacks or a couple beers, make it feel like a little event. And that’s where she lost it. Like I had just said women should be posted in the kitchen or something. That’s not what I meant at all.
I wasn’t saying girlfriends need to play waitress every Sunday. I was saying little gestures go a long way. Bringing out chips and a beer isn’t about being a waitress, it’s about effort. It’s saying, “Hey, I love you, I know this means a lot to you, and I’m part of it.” That’s all. Men don’t ask for much. We don’t want drama, we don’t mind paying for everything, sure we want sex but even that’s a coin flip. We just want to watch ball in peace for four (sometimes eight) hours. That’s it.
And for the record, if she doesn’t want to be involved, that’s fine too. Go do your thing, brunch, Target, reality TV, whatever makes you happy. But if you do want to be involved, there are levels to it. You don’t have to know what a cover two defense is to be part of the Sunday experience. You just have to show you care, in your own way.
So no, it’s not about “serving” your man. It’s about supporting him in something he loves, the same way we sit through your favorite shows, pretend (we Lowkey do) to care about who gets the final rose. Relationships are about balance, and on Sundays, that balance just happens to come with football, beers, and maybe a little guac on the side.
