The City of Philadelphia Literally Experienced The Worst Night In Professional Sports History

It was always a possibility. We didn't want to believe it could ever happen, but the stage was set for an all-time nuclear level meltdown in Philly sports once the Phillies forced a game 4. It would be the Phillies taking on the Dodgers at 6:08, followed up by the Flyers opening their season against the reigning Stanley Cup Champs at 7pm. Finally, capped off with the Eagles looking to bounce back after a loss to take on the New York Giants on a short week for Thursday Night Football at 8:15pm.

3 Philly teams all playing on the same night, with all the games overlapping. The Phillies were on the brink of elimination. The Eagles were showing signs of being a completely broken team. And then you have the Flyers, who realistically maybe only 18 people care about right now. The possibility of all 3 of them losing was always on the table, but Philly sports fans have tried to be a little more optimistic in recent years. We didn't want to think we're a city filled with nothing but tremendous losers. But as it turns out...that was the case last night as Philly sports teams combined to do something that nobody in the history of pro sports has ever done before, except for Philadelphia.

3 games. 3 losses were the scores were an identical 1:2 score. And the funny thing about all these games is that they all featured the defending champ of their respective league. The Florida Panthers are reigning Stanley Cup Champs. The LA Dodgers are reigning World Series Champs. The Philadelphia Eagles are reigning Super Bowl Champs. And the only defending champion who didn't win last night turns out to be the idiots from Philadelphia.

Let's just get the Flyers out of the way to start since nobody really cares. They lost to Florida 2-1. It happens, and hopefully it happens a lot this year. The Flyers are still a terribly constructed team who have an awful defensive lineup, and terrible goaltending. They need to lose as much as possible and give themselves a chance at Gavin McKenna in the draft. So as far as all the losses from last night go, that was the best.

Next, we'll get to the Phillies. I already wrote about that one here.

Not only did Philly sports make history last night after all of those teams lost on the same night, but the Phillies made their own history as well.

After sleeping on the loss, I have a couple more things to say. For starters--everybody is being so ridiculously soft about Orion Kerkering. The amount of people who think you can't blame Kerkering for the loss last night because they "feel so bad for him as a human" is ridiculous. He's a professional athlete who proved last night that he is not capable of doing his job, and he deserves a ton of blame.

That's not to say he's the only one on the hook here. Most of the blame goes to Bryce Harper and Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber. The Phillies were so close in all 4 of these games, and they just needed their stars to step up and deliver at crucial moments in those games to be the difference maker. Outside of game 3, they all came up so small. Especially Bryce Harper, who deserves every ounce of scrutiny coming his way. The performance he had this series erased everything he's done for the past few postseasons. He brought the Phillies to the World Series in 2022, but he actively sunk this team in 2025. And then Rob Thomson deserves a massive chunk of the blame for putting Kerkering in to begin with. Pretty much everybody outside of the starting pitchers and Bader deserves a chunk of the blame. But let's stop acting like you can't blame Orion Kerkering for ending the season in the most embarrassing way possible, and the only time it has ever been done in MLB history.

And then we get to the Eagles.

The Eagles are broken. No other way to put it. This team is in an awful spot right now. We knew the defense wasn't going to be as strong as last season, but there are massive portions of each game where it looks like the opposing offense doesn't even have to try to get whatever they want against them. Jaxson Dart is a much better quarterback than people were originally willing to give him credit for, but he was having his way with the Eagles defense all night. Anytime he wanted to pick up 8-10 yards, he had a wide open receiver to hit.

The offensive line is struggling. Obviously injuries are playing a factor there. But how many times are the Eagles going to hand the ball off to Saquon Barkley, and he's going to get brought down by 3 different guys behind the line of scrimmage? The Eagles have so many negative plays this year, and it's impossible to ignore the fact that they simply do not have one of the best offensive lines in football anymore.

But the main issue on this team right now is the quarterback, the wide receiver, and the offensive coordinator. Between Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, and Kevin Patullo, it seems like none of them are on the same page this year. Jalen Hurts has proven all the doubters to be right so far this season. It's really starting to look like Jalen Hurts cannot be great, unless everyone around him is also great. The O-line isn't playing great, Saquon isn't playing great, and the receivers aren't playing great. And now it appears that Jalen doesn't have it in him to make everybody else around him better. Instead, his game is just elevated by everyone else. And it's clearly causing a massive divide in the locker room.

Now it's tough because from a physical standpoint, Jalen Hurts isn't doing his job and it's killing the Eagles. But AJ Brown is also playing a huge role in killing this team, because he's doing it from within.

This entire answer is a direct shot at Jalen Hurts. Kevin Patullo hasn't taken one of the most explosive offenses in football, and turned them into one of the most predictable. Jalen has definitely missed plenty of deep shots downfield to open receivers, but most of the time he doesn't have anything to work with. Whether that's by design because the coaches don't trust him, or by design because Kevin Patullo can't orchestrate an offense that causes any confusion. Either way, AJ Brown is the only human in Philadelphia right now who is saying that Kevin Patullo is doing an "amazing job". And the only reason he's saying that is because it is putting the blame on Jalen Hurts.

And it's not just Jalen. Because he's also spitting in the face of Saquon Barkley, too.

Jalen confirmed the meeting that happened between those three guys. Saquon confirmed the meeting that happened between those three guys. But AJ Brown is clearly playing around here to act like it never happened. Which would be funny after a win. But after a disgusting loss like that to a division opponent, it's a slap in the face. It's more division, and more distraction. He was a distraction last year, but the Eagles had enough talent to overcome it. They had enough talent to win even when things weren't perfect in the locker room. This year, they don't have that same luxury. The team isn't good enough to overcome AJ Brown killing them from within, and that's how you lose twice in 5 days.

The Eagles were 3-2 last year, and they won a Super Bowl. So it's not like the season is over or anything. But it's hard to shake the fears of this season feelings oddly familiar to 2018 and 2023. Trip to the Super Bowl followed up by a complete and total mess. It's a broken team, and the foundation is where there's the most rot.

Anyway, it's another beautiful day in the city of Philadelphia. Whenever anyone questions why this fanbase is as unhinged as we are, we can always point back to nights like October 9, 2025 as precise contributors to our insanity.
