'It Was A Bad Call' - Even Sean McVay Knows He Fucked Up, Lost The Game By Taking The Ball Out Of Matthew Stafford's Hands On 4th Down
There are two very definitive statements from this play.
1) Sean McVay was 100% right in going for it on 4th down here. I don't care that the 49ers had Mac Jones banged up, a bunch of nobodies out there, you're dealing with the clock too. It was 4th and short, go win the game.
2) Sean McVay lost the game by running the most basic play call and taking it out of Matthew Stafford's hands.
Because 2 happened doesn't mean it was a bad decision to go for it. I don't know how you take the ball out of Stafford's hands when you have those receivers and guys were more than comfortable getting open and getting yards last night.
At least he admitted he fucked up:
I always wonder in these scenarios what would it take for Stafford (or someone like Stafford) to just check out of it. I get it, it's a short yardage scenario, you should be able to pick up that half yard. Then again, Kyren Williams did fumble in a short yardage situation that would have won the game for the Rams in the 4th quarter:
I just think this is where football coaches overthink it all. They try to get cute when it comes to game on the line or 4th down plays. Just use your best players, it's as simple as that. If you have one of the elite quarterbacks in the league, don't waste him out there on a play to extend the game. But, who knows? Perhaps it was written in the stars that the moment Mac Jones showe up like this, the 49ers were going to win:
Either way, Sean McVay is right. It was a bad call. It was a shitty call. You can only run that play on 4th and short if it's Tecmo Bowl and you have Bo Jackson.
