In The 2nd Wild College Football Finish of The Night, Arizona State Came Back From 17-0 to Knock-Off Unbeaten TCU
On the eve of what some are dubbing "the greatest slate of college football games ever" (which seems like a stretch to me, but it's a fantastic slate nonetheless), we got about as a good of a Friday night as college football can deliver. But if even just 2 of the big games today are as good as last night's, I don't think anybody will be complaining.
Arizona State-TCU wasn't the shootout Florida State-Virginia was, but the finish was equally as compelling. Especially the final 2 minutes. To very briefly set the stage for anyone who didn't watch – TCU went up 17-0 to start the game.
Then TCU's offense stopped scoring and doing cool things like this...
And started dabbling in things of this nature…
All the while, Arizona State (primarily on the backs of QB Sam Leavitt and WR Jordan Tyson), mounted a comeback.
Coming out of the 2 minute warning, as you probably saw in that previous video, Arizona State scores on a 4th & goal to tie the game 24-24.
But surely that was far too much time left for TCU. It's far too much time for any college football team. I don't care if the score is 3-0, and the offense has -30 total yards all game. When there's 2 minutes left in any college football game, seemingly without fail, the defense will drop into the softest weakest most cowardly prevent defense their head coach could possibly draw up, and the offense is going to march right down the field for a touchdown. At bare minimum a field goal.
Nevermind! Upset of the century! A college football team made a stop at the end of a game! The only problem for Arizona State is that they recovered the fumble much too close to their opponents end zone. Within the 10 yard line. Had that ball been recovered on the 30, it's game over. Arizona State almost certainly picks up a first down or two, runs the clock down to nothing, and kicks the chip shot field goal (which unfortunately are becoming more and more automatic for college kickers).
But after this highly questionable horse collar call (which looked way more like a facemask on the offense, which allegedly is something that can actually be called in tackle football)…
Arizona State winds up with a 4th & goal line with just over a minute left to play. It's killing me that I can't find a clip of this play (if I come across one I'll add it), but Sundevils' Head Coach/Friend of The Program Kenny Dillingham decides to fucking go for it. They run a QB sneak, which to me did not look like he got in. Some people seem to think he got it over the line, but it didn't matter. Arizona State false started. I'm not entirely sure that false start didn't completely bail them out. Either way, Arizona State kicked the short field goal. 27-24.
But yet again… with just over a minute to play… that's way too much time for TCU. No collegiate defense could possibly stop two consecutive two minute drills in a single football game right? Not on Josh Hoover's watch.
This has been John Rich's "Couldn't Sleep So Decided to Recap a Random Friday Night College Football Game He Happened to Watch" blog of the week. Someone's gotta put the sports back into Barstool around here. Thanks for tuning in.
P.S. Of course Houston-Oregon State went into OT after arguably the worst blocked (o-line wise) field goal attempt I've ever seen.
I'm gonna end up having blogged a game recap of the 3rd worst Friday night college football game of Week 5. God damn it.
