Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza Needs To Be Fired

The full collapse is nearly complete. After spending a good portion of the past two months in denial, I can't really try to fool myself any longer. Maybe a miracle will happen and the Mets can somehow back door their way into the playoffs, but regardless of what happens, Carlos Mendoza needs to go.
This was always an odd hiring. He never had MLB managerial experience and was most famous for spreading 40 sunflower seeds on the ground before every game to honor the 40-man roster. Um, OK? I guess the good news is that's now what he's most famous for anymore. Instead, he can join Willie Randolph and Jerry Manuel in the debate of who was in charge when the Mets had the most shit all over the bed.

Is this all Mendoza's fault? No, but someone has to take the fall for this. Like the old cliche says, you can't fire the whole team. It's also not like he doesn't have plenty of blood on his hands. The bullpen got wiped out when he had a lightening quick hook for any pitcher not named David Peterson. It's not his fault that a team with a payroll bigger than the GNP of some small countries relied on Frankie Montas and Paul Blackburn. But, it is his fault that he could never really adjust.
The Mets are 37-54 since June 13th. With a payroll this big and expectations this high, that's just unacceptable. Let's also be honest. It's not like anyone ever considered Carlos Mendoza to be some great baseball mind. This is certainly a spot you could make an upgrade.
So, who do you replace him with? I think you'd ideally get someone with managerial experience. Gabe Kapler is available after wearing out his welcome with the Phillies and Giants, but he did once win 107 games in a season. Scott Servais had a winning record with the Seattle Mariners over 9 seasons. That's not easy to accomplish. I think he'd be an improvement over Mendoza. Ex-Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is the current Mets bench coach but I'm not interested in that. He's 63 and his last two seasons in Toronto did not go well.
This team needs to overhaul a bunch of things. The top 7 MLB prospects are all in AAA or the MLB which creates a big logjam. Guys like Mark Vientos, Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio all play the same position. Pete Alonso is a free agent. Edwin Diaz could opt-out and join him on the market. The pitching rotation has been left in worse shape than most of the cast in Weapons. Major moves have to come at many levels of this organization.
The first change needs to come soon. On Monday, this team will either miraculously be preparing to face the Dodgers in the playoffs or be looking for a new manager. Anything else is unacceptable. Then again, unacceptable is what we've been bathing in for months.
