Mike Gundy Fired After 20 Years at Oklahoma State
Man, what an unceremonious end for Mike Gundy in Stillwater. Gundy was fired Tuesday in the middle of his 21st season as Oklahoma State's head coach following a 69-3 loss to Oregon and a home loss to Tulsa. The Cowboys' 1-2 start comes on the heels of a 3-9 season in 2024.
This needed to be done, but Gundy just seemed like one of those guys who would only leave Oklahoma State when he decided to. Plenty of other programs tried to poach him over the years and he always chose to stay at his alma mater. He won at least 10 games eight times and came within a hair's breadth of playing for national titles in 2011 and 2021. Things just came off the rails in the last couple years.
This should be a pretty desirable job, even with how things have gone lately. OSU is in a conference it should be able to win most years and it's still a very recognizable brand. If the Cowboys could get somebody like John Sumrall or Alex Golesh, that would be a home run and I think they'd be right back in the mix competing for a College Football Playoff spot pretty much every year.
Pour one out for Gundy, though. Hate that it had to end this way for a legend, but this is why you don't coach at your alma mater. It only ends one of two ways and this way is far more likely than the other.
