The New Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Crime Drama Looks Awesome
I'm a sucker for a Matt Damon/Ben Affleck movie. Good Will Hunting is one of my ten favorite movies ever and I love Air probably far too much. I just really like these two guys. Don't get me wrong, there's a line. Shrinking was one of the most disappointed I've ever been at a movie theater and Live By Night is a train wreck of a movie. But when these guys are in something together, they rarely miss a step.
I will say I am bummed out that this is a Netflix release. Put this in theaters! Especially in the dead zone of January. Hopefully, it gets even a limited release. I'd love to see this on the big screen.
Even taking Affleck and Damon out of this, the story and rest of the cast has me hooked. Potentially dirty cops trying to rip off $40 million dollars? It has Stephen Yuen and Kyle Chandler in it as well? Sign me up.
I'm happy that they are doing a movie like this as opposed to chasing Oscar trophies. I'd like to see them do another big award favorite together before they retire but I like them slumming it up here in a gritty, nasty movie. Hopefully they will write that one.
My one apprehension here is Joe Carnahan (who not only directed this but also wrote it). He's coming off Shadow Force with Kerry Washington. I have it ranked 58th of the 102 movies I've seen in theaters this year. Jeff D Lowe absolutely hated it. Either way, we're not talking about Scorsese or Tarantino here.
Would Affleck and Damon agree to be in this if the script wasn't pretty solid? I have to have faith in the cast here (also Yuen and Chandler) as opposed to the director.
Thinking about this movie today, I was asking myself why I like these guys so much. I think it comes down to this scene. Saw it in the theaters when it came out in 1997 and still haven't seen a better example of true friendship on screen. I hope every guy has a friend like that that would care that much about you. Pretty cool that these guys are still doing movies together almost 30 years later.
