WATCH: A Delta Pilot Casually Explains in Mid-Air That He Just Narrowly Avoided a Collision With a B-52 Bomber
CNN — A pilot flying a Delta Air Lines regional jet on Friday apologized to his passengers after making a hard turn to avoid colliding with a US Air Force B-52 bomber, audio from the incident shows.
The incident occurred on SkyWest Flight 3788, which was operating as a Delta Connection flight, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Minot, North Dakota, SkyWest said in a statement.
The flight landed safely in Minot “after being cleared for approach by the tower but performed a go-around when another aircraft became visible in their flight path,” the statement read.
The close call is under investigation by SkyWest Airlines.
I have always been fine on planes because I've operated under the framework that the odds of anything happening to you are so infinitesimal that spending any time worrying about it would only be the work of a feeble mind. You are at significantly greater risk every time you get behind the wheel of a car and nobody bats an eye at doing that.
But it doesn't help that every week now, there's a new video of planes colliding in mid-air, crashing to the ground immediately after takeoff or, in this case, a pilot explaining to passengers that he had to pull off some sort of stunt maneuver to avoid a B-52 hurdling towards them. Fun stuff.
I had to look up who the current Secretary of Transportation is following the departure of Pardon My Take's Lib of the Year Takie Presenter Mayor Pete and it's apparently a man by the name of Sean Duffy. I don't know anything about Mr. Duffy, but I'd appreciate he or someone in his office doing something about the seemingly large air traffic control issues we've been having recently. I would love to get on my next flight with there having been no viral videos of deaths or near-deaths on a commercial aircraft in the two weeks or so preceding it. I don't think that's asking a ton.
If there's any positive spin from this incident, I'd say this pilot has earned some pretty good leverage in negotiating his way from SkyWest flights to Minot, North Dakota, to the big leagues. I feel like if you successfully avoid certain death at the hands of a military aircraft, you should get to cut the line at least a little bit.
It would be great to get this shit figured out and not have to worry about situations like this going forward, though.
