The Texans Have Jammed Up The Entire NFL By Giving A Fully Guaranteed Deal To A 2nd Rounder
Like you just read, the Texans made Jayden Higgins the first 2nd round pick to get a fully-guaranteed contract. Cool, right? Players making money isn't a bad thing. God knows the NFL and it's owners rake in enough cash as it is. So, what's the problem? The "problem", if you even consider it to be one, is that now every 2nd rounder is looking for the same thing. Starting with Chargers hope for the future, Ole Miss WR Tre Harris.
But he isn't the only one. 30/32 picks from the second round still haven't signed. Not good! Although, I guess you can look at this as a competitive advantage for the Texans. If other teams have to financially commit to a pick that goes belly up, it puts them in a money bind which makes them worse. On the flip side, it can also hurt the Texans the same way. So, if you're Texan's GM Nick Caserio, you just need to have SUPREME faith in your drafting process. And, to be fair to him, he has had some great success outside of the first round.
Do all these players deserve a fully guaranteed deal? Hell if I know. None of them have played an NFL snap and there will undoubtably be players in this round that fizzle out. We're only a few days removed from Quinshon Judkins, who was 2 picks after Higgins, being arrested for DV. What I do know is that it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out from a business perspective. And, as much as I despise the Texans for obliterating my sweet baby boy in the playoffs, I can admire them putting their nuts on the table and telling the entire NFL that they fully believe in their process.
