Respect Tradition: Rich Rodriguez Wants To Burn A Couch In Morgantown (And Prepay The Fine) If West Virginia Wins A Big Game This Year
This is how you win back a fanbase. Well, sure, coming back to coach at said school helps, but embracing the tradition of burning couches and paying the fine does it too. I never understood the burning of a couch tradition, but, hey, this is tradition we're talking about. Plus, it's not my couch. I promise you I will never burn the couch as a 38-year old father. They'll get ruined on their own but I will absolutely not burn it.
If we're being honest, there's one date circled for this. September 13th against Pitt. You win the Backyard Brawl, you burn the couch as a coach. You have no other move, this is the game where the fanbases fucking hate each other. This is the one that WVU wants to win the most. I bet if you asked every WVU fan what's the one game they want a win during this season it's 90% Pitt as the answer. Plus, you gotta get them back for that 13-9 loss in the 2007 season that cost you a chance at a title.
I'll also say this. There's something different in college football when WVU is at least fun. They aren't one of those teams that has to be good, but they need to be fun again. We need the Steve Slaton's of the world and Noel Devine's back around us. I want them to be running the spread option and in and out of the top-5 from time to time. That's why Rich Rodriguez is going to burn a couch.
