'I Drank More Than I Normally Do' - Xander Schauffele Delivered The Most Relatable Answer On How Winning The Open Last Year Changed His Life
I find everything about golf entertaining and intriguing. You have guys from all over the place in different parts of their careers. Some guys scrambling to keep their card, names who were competing to win majors completely fall off, guys coming out of nowhere and then the staples. Xander was a staple, still is probably, but this year whether it was injuries early in the season or just not truly competing at majors, it feels 'off' for him this year.
Now he's back across the pond getting ready for The Open. These two weeks are some of my favorite in the golf year. You get The Scottish this week leading into The Open at Portrush this year. Links style golf, early morning golf, a nice little change of pace from what we're used to watching. It's also The Open, the oldest event in golf, a win there can change your life and career.
Well, at least one way. Xander out here saying he drank more than he normally does after winning is what he should be doing. You're at the end of the season basically, it was his second major of the year and had him in conversation with Scottie about who had the better year.
It's not exactly a secret we see golfers as the most buttoned up, least charismatic, sort of by the book athletes out there. I want to hear that Xander decided to party a little too much. Winning The Open didn't change the pressure on him or anything like that, it gave him a ton of money, put him in a different tier with multiple major wins in a season and let him party. This is the sort of answer he should be giving instead of some canned answer about how it means the world and anything else like that. Not to mention the Claret Jug is a great drinking trophy.
