What Song Will Oasis Open Up Their Reunion Tour With Tonight In Wales? BONUS- The 5 Songs I Can’t Wait To Hear Most

We are officially less than 5 hours away from the Gallagher brothers joining each other on stage, for the first time in 16 years.

I am headed from Newport (Wales, not Rhody) to Cardiff Centre to meet up with Robbie and Nate and head into principality stadium. I ran into a childhood friend I haven’t seen since I was like 10 years old at the train station earlier today who came here for the shows too.

The band Cast and good friend of Oasis’, frontman for The Verve, Richard Ashcroft, are opening up.

As Robbie mentioned in his blog yesterday, there were people camping out in line to get in yesterday, and the electricity in the air here is pretty wild.

I don’t know why some people hate on this band so much. Or hate the people who love them. Nobody is claiming they’re better than The Beatles, or even close. Some people just love their style of rock and roll music. But whatever. I’m so fucking excited for tonight and really can’t believe it’s finally happening.

I won’t beat a dead horse anymore. Let’s discuss some Draft King props shall we?

Namely, what is going to be the first song the fellas open up with and showcase to the world. This is kind of a bigger deal than most shows considering they haven’t sung together, played together, or even been seen in public together in almost 20 years.

I covered the prop contest Draft Kings is running last week in this blog-

It’s officially time to throw it back to the 2000s- Oasis is actually back, and our partners at DraftKings are giving you a shot to get in on the fun. Enter the Free $2.5K Reunion Tour Pool for a chance to win your share of $2,500 in DK Dollars- all you have to do is answer a few questions. But the first song prop is a standout to me.

This is Prop #4 but for the sake of the blog subject, we will address it first.

Selfishly, as I mentioned on the podcast with Colin, if I had any input/creative control, I would describe to the band that exact vision.

Picture the stage hands wrap Ashcroft’s stage breakdown. They finish setting up Oasis’ guitars, check the lines all one final time, and give the front of house the thumbs up.

The lights fade to black and there is an immense roar from the 75,000 people packed into the stadium, anxiously anticipating something they’ve all been waiting half their lives for.

With the stadium covered in black, the sound of chopper blades begin to hum and the bass rumbles.

The roars grow louder.

In comes the high pitched stabs from the electric guitar.

Louder.

As the bang of the kick drum establishes the bass-line, a spotlight shines from the back of the stadium onto the stage. Then a second. The place absolutely loses its mind and the show is off and running when the rest of the band brings in the tune and Liam belts out “all yer dreams are made…

“What’s The Story Morning Glory” to me is the ultimate show starter.

Will the band open up their very first show back with it?

Doubtful to be honest. But one can dream.

If I had to put money on it, and for this prop pool contest, I went with “any other song” because I think it will be something semi-cheesy and sentimental like “Acquiesce”, where both brothers have vocals, and for how much the crowd and press will eat up the obvious nod in the lyrics to “needing each other”.

I can also see “Hello” being another possibility for the same reasons. (“It’s so good to be back”)

Get your choice in for the chance to win, only at Draft Kings.

Thank you to Robbie, Nate, and Colin for helping put together some of these props with me for Draft Kings.

Bonus-

Here are the songs I can’t wait to hear live tonight.

#5- “Morning Glory”

for reasons stated above. It’s also probably the closest Oasis song they perform live to what the studio version sounds like. Same cadence from Liam. Same tempo from the band. Loud as fuck. Just such a jam.

#4- “Champagne Supernova”

This is the ultimate closer song. Part of me thinks Noel wrote it with that intention in mind. It’s also one of the last great “epics” in modern music. For some reason nobody writes songs that are longer than 3-4 minutes nowadays. Thanks TikTok

#3- “Don’t Look Back In Anger”

Ever since I saw/heard this, and felt the goosebumps when the crowd takes the wheel, I’ve wanted to experience it first hand. So unreal.

#2- “Live Forever”

Just one of the best, most upbeat, optimistic, and happy songs that makes me think back to when I was younger and my biggest concern in life was getting my homework done so I could go outside and ride my bike with my friends.

#1- “Slide Away”

For me this is Oasis’ best song of all time.

They were the first live music concert I had ever attended- back in 1996 at the Worcester Centrum. I went through hell and back to pay off my friends older brother to let me cram in the back of his Dodge with him and his friends, snuck out of my house telling my mom I was sleeping at my buddy’s house, and had the time of my life. Literally. I was so enchanted by everything about a live rock concert that I was hooked for life. Like a heroin addict describing that first hit. I totally get it. There’s nothing else like it. People from all walks of life, who would probably be at each others throats outside the concert, if they were discussing religion, politics, or sports. But music is indeed the universal language. It manages to bring everybody together in harmony. Even if just for a few hours. People forget about all the bullshit. All their problems. All the nonsense that divides us. And just loves life and gets lost in the music. It’s so beautiful.

That all truly “hit me” that first time hearing “Slide Away” live.

I couldn’t explain it.

Liam didn’t absolutely crush it like he did in the Knebworth video that I posted above (seriously, a must listen), but he was damn close.

I didn’t realize the “live” version could sound so different from the version I’d listened to 5,000 times on the cd. It wasn’t so much that he improvised, (he did slightly), but that he was off on his own at times it seemed.

And at the end… that reprise! Mamma mia! I remember thinking that was totally out of nowhere- the “don’t know, don’t care, all I know is you can take me there…”.

Chills.

Followed up by him yelling “what for”, spinning around, grabbing his drink and walking towards the back.

So fucking bad ass. So rock n roll.

When I got older and understood music better, I always wondered why the engineer never mixed that part of the song in better so you could actually hear it. And when the Remaster of Definitely Maybe was announced I prayed they would nail it. But not really.

So for those reasons, that’s why I cannot wait to hear this song live tonight.
