Connor McDavid Was Pretttttyyyy Non-committal When Talking About His Future In Edmonton
"Talk to my agent and...make some decisions..and there's no rush..."--Connor McDavid
No rush? Brother, you're up for an extension in two weeks.
IF I were an Oilers fan this is the kind of non-answer that would keep me up at night. The best player in the league. Arguably the most talented player in the history of the league. Face of the franchise. Face of the league. Guy who absolutely dragged the Oilers to the Final in back to back years. He had an opportunity to be like "we'll start the negotiations here soon. I want to be here forever" and went a different route. He opened the door to the possibility of leaving.
I wouldn't even blame him if he did just walk. He's done his bit in Edmonton. 10+ years and blood, sweat, and tears with a team around him that can't get him over the top. He turns 29 next season. He says there's plenty of time, but how many more ELITE years where he is the best player in the world does he have in him? 5? 6? If he signs an 8 year extension that he is eligible for, well…that's it. That's his entire career. If he doesn't feel confident in the Edmonton management (not sure why he would) then how does he sign a deal to seal his fate?
This is officially the most important story in the NHL and with the salary cap going up for the next three years EVERYONE is going to be positioning themselves to enter the McDavid sweepstakes and Edmonton will be back in the dark ages.
