The First Trailer For Jeremy Allen White's Bruce Springsteen Movie Is Here
Bruce Springsteen's journey crafting his 1982 album Nebraska, which emerged as he recorded Born in the USA with the E Street Band. Based on Warren Zanes' book.
I have slightly mixed feelings on this.
Firstly, from a visual standpoint, it looks fantastic. All of director Scott Coopers typically intimate camera work plus great production value to immerse us in the period. The music also sounded great which is unfortunately not always a given in these movies. I'd note that Jeremy Allen White wasn't the immediate actor I thought of to look like Springsteen but he kinda pulls it off. Also, being the icon that he is, it is kind of crazy it took this long to get a true biopic on the Boss.
On the other hand, it falls into a few biopic slop cliches in the trailer. "He's fixing this hole in himself, and when he fixes that, he's gonna fix the whole world'. Alright, man. I think we can make a single movie about a musician without pretending they're changing the world. On top of that, I worry about the voice (Jeremy Allen White apparently did all his own singing and learned guitar for the role) which felt good in spots and not so good in others. To be perfectly clear, though, I will take an actor attempting to actually sing over lip syncing every day of the week. That opens a dangerous door which could eventually lead to something crazy like an actor winning an Oscar for someone else's voice….
On the backend, this was directed by Scott Cooper who made of the best music movies of the last few decades in 'Crazy Heart' as well as the very underrated 'Hostiles'. Cooper also wrote the script, which is based on Warren Zane's biography, 'Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska'. It is set to release October 24th.
