Golf Dad: J.J. Spaun Woke Up At 3am Yesterday To Take Care Of His Kid Throwing Up, Claims It Fit The Mold Of The Chaos Of Playing At Oakmont
I'll argue that there's nothing more perfect than the US Open final round being on Father's Day. It sets up for an ideal day for dads everywhere. We get to have some breakfast, maybe get an early round in and then settle into our favorite recliner for the toughest tournament in golf. For others, this hits close to home. Waking up at 3am, having to go get medicine and take care of a kid is something any dad has done. You know the sound, you hear the slight crying or someone waking you up, you do the one-eyed look and have to hop out of bed and try to wake up fast to be an adult. There's no book for that, there's no plan, it's figuring shit out as you go, even if you're about to win a US Open.
But what I do laugh at is Spaun just being like yeah this wasn't why I shot a 40 on the front, but it fit the mold of chaos of playing Oakmont. I saw some people saying this helped him. We saw guys lose their goddamn minds all week whether it was Scottie, Rory, Wyndham Clark, Cam Young, Shane Lowry, we had club throws and complaints and everything else that comes with getting punched in the face at Oakmont.
One guy was just the same the entire week. You didn't see emotion from Spaun until he started bawling his eyes out after making that 60-foot putt on 18. Dads everywhere know dealing with a sick kid will have you prepared for anything. There's nothing worse as a parent than having to deal with your kid throwing up. They can't handle it, it's gross, you have no answers, just gotta hope they keep something down at some point. Big win for dads everywhere yesterday.
