Rejoice! Derek Carr Has Retired & the Saints FINALLY Start the Rebuild....
New Orleans was PARTYING on Saturday after Derek Carr announced his retirement from the NFL.
Carr & New Orleans did not get along in his 3 years. He never fully embraced the city and the fans felt it. They always say "If You Love New Orleans, It Will Love You Back" and Carr NEVER grasped this concept.
His 3 years were injury plagued and the Saints struggled to be mediocre. The writing was on the wall ESP with Kellen Moore and a new coaching regime taking over.
The move clears a ton of salary cap space in the future too.
Kellen Moore is saying the Saints have a three man QB competition on their hands but I have some doubts about the validity of that statement.
The Saints LOVED Louisville QB Tyler Shough selecting him with the 40th overall pick of the 2nd round. He is Moore's guy and has to be the favorite.
Spencer Rattler started multiple games as a rookie and it was a mixed bag. It was honestly hard to judge his performance as he was thrown to the wolves with replacement level talent everywhere on an injury ravished team.
Jake Haener showed no positives in his start and has to be considered the long shot in this 3 way battle.
Give embattled Saints President Mickey Loomis some credit for finally committing to the rebuild this offseason after rolling the salary cap problems over for a decade.
For once, the Saints did not trade up in the draft which is a miracle. They landeda stout offensive tackle in Kelvin Banks with the 9th pick and the offensive line should be good for years to come pairing him with Fuaga (14th overall pick in 2024) at the tackles with Erik McCoy, Caesar Ruiz & Trevor Penning moving inside.
There is a lot of speed & talent at WR with Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed & Brandin Cooks but ZERO size.
Brandon Staley is a great defensive co-ordinator hire and the Saints gave him some pieces in the Draft in DT Vernon Broughton, S Jonas Sanker, CB Quiny Riley & LB Danny Stutsman to join the aging corps of Cam Jordan, Demario Davis & Tyronn Mathieu.
Will the Saints be any good in 2025?
Hell if I know. Tyler Shough is 26 with 3 season ending college football injuries. Moore loves him which gives some hope but it feels like a total crapshoot.
At least he is embracing NOLA which already makes him more well liked than Carr…..
Hopefully Shough is the guy and the Saints are competitive battling to win 7-9 games.
On the flip side, at least if he sucks New Orleans gets at a shot at LSU QB Doug Nussmeier or Texas QB Arch Manning in the next couple of years. (Nussmeier's dad Doug is the OC)
At least Derek Carr and his albatross contract are gone and for that Saints fans are thankful……
