Problem Solved: The 7-33 Colorado Rockies Have Fired Manager Bud Black, One Day After GM Bill Schmidt Said They Weren't Thinking Of Firing Him

The Rockies began today 6-33 on the season, fresh off the heels of a 21-0 loss to the Padres that seemed to send shockwaves towards every fan in the game. When you get shutout, lose by 21, and are on a direct track to break the 2024 White Sox record of futility it tends to get around the league. So what did they do to try and fix this thing?

Well first of all they turned it on and beat the Padres 9-3. San Diego closed somewhere around a -310 road favorite and had the run line up to -3.5. They lost outright. Baseball is so dumb.

But following the game manager Bud Black was given his pink slip and shown the door.

Firing your manager in this situation after a win is hilarious. Doing it also after the GM goes out of his way to defend said manager is even better.

"I think our guys are still playing hard, and that's what I look at," Schmidt said. "Guys are working hard every day, they come with energy, for the most part. I don't think we are (at that point of firing Black). Guys still believe in what we are doing and where we are headed. We are all frustrated." (CBS Sports)

If anything it's the perfect microcosm for the Rockies, showing they truly have no idea what they're doing.

And I'm definitely not writing this blog to defend Bud Black. The team hasn't had a winning record with him since 2018. But to sit here and say Bud Black was the main reason for their misery is asinine. There's only so much a manager can do to impact the play on the field. You can't do anything with this roster. Even if you let these guys cheat I don't think they're stringing together wins.

As Dave Roberts echoes home below, no one could win with that roster.

Now is Bud Black's firing the beginning of cleaning house? If the Rockies want to pretend they're a real organization it would be, but it'd be so perfect if that was it. Like imagine how GM Bill Schmidt must have felt seeing his phone ring today and it being owner Dick Monfort. He probably had his home ready to be listed on the market only to find out Monfort wanted to fire Bud Black instead. I wish that phone call recording could get leaked out.

Normally it'd be a bad thing for someone to get fired, but in Bud Black's case, he's free now. Free of this hellscape. Now he can pick a nice spot to go on vacation instead of worrying about this shit show of a team. He also won't have his name solely attached to the team if they go on to set the losses record. Only 33 of a potential 121+ are on him. Tough blow for interim manager Warren Schaeffler.
