Absolutely Brutal Red Sox News As Triston Casas Ruptured His Patellar Tendon Hustling To First Base Last Night

Freak injury last night in the Sox game as Triston Casas was trying to leg out an infield hit following a check swing.

Casas' left knee buckles just before stretching for the bag with his right. You just knew the outcome of this was going to be really bad.

And it is. Pretty much worst case scenario for the Red Sox first baseman.

Doing something he's probably down a million times in his life and all it takes is one bad stride to blow up your knee. Just like that his life has been flipped upside down. Casas now misses all of this year and potentially some of next too. It's the exact injury that Edwin Diaz suffered during the World Baseball Classic.

The ripple effect here for the Red Sox is devastating. They really don't have a first baseman in their entire system to plug in to play the position. It kinda seems like the smart move is to get Raffy Devers a first baseman's glove and throw him over there to see if he can hold his own. That frees up the DH for maybe a Wilyer Abreu and allows you to promote top outfield prospect Roman Anthony so he play everyday. Thing is the team is clearly manipulating his service time so I don't think they're in a hurry to make that move. If you don't move Devers you're looking at Romy Gonzalez who isn't a first baseman either.

Update: Looks like Devers isn't moving anywhere

Casas wasn't lighting the world on fire with his bat, but he at least was a real first baseman. Now you're kinda searching for answers here.
