Jay Bilas Is Sick And Tired Of Refs Wasting All Our Time Staring At The Monitor, Started A Fight Among College Hoops Fans About Changing The Game
I know I'm one of the few people who tend to like Jay Bilas more than complain about his complaining. He's 100% right about a few things here. The college basketball replay system is broken. Games are going nearly 2.5 hours in regulation because every single call in the last 2 minutes is reviewed. It's not quick reviews either, refs are staring at the monitor for a couple minutes, teams are huddling, not having to waste timeouts because they get 6 free ones late. Refs are afraid to make calls because they know they can just go to the monitor.
Where he really embraced debate though is the quarters. Nobody and I mean nobody starts yelling at each other like college basketball fans and quarters. Me personally? Yeah, there should be quarters with fouls resetting but I don't want to lose the one-and-one. Think you can do it where the 4th team foul each quarter is a 1-and-1 and the 6th foul is 2 shots. It's all about game flow and keeping the game moving instead of a free throw contest because Pat Adams wants to blow his whistle 42 times in the first 8 minutes of a game. Free throw shooting contests fucking suck. No one enjoys watching a game like that.
This is where the war comes in between fans. Some love having halves because it's all we know in college basketball. Some want quarters because why are we the only game in the sport that doesn't play in quarters? This may be shocking to hear, but you can change without just turning into the NBA. Keep the 1-and-1. Reset fouls after each quarter. Those are simple.
The biggest problem though is the replay system. I'm telling anyone and everyone know who might not watch college basketball until this month. You will get annoyed. It's the only sport that hasn't figured out how to change their replay system yet. I still stand by the fact refs should only have 30 seconds to look at the monitor and if you don't see something definitive you move on with the call on the floor. Get the ball back in play and let's go. Games should be 2 hours max.
